Biography
Born February 13, 1805 in the city of Paris .
Received a law degree.
In 1833 he joined the Ministry of Justice of France. I became interested in geology, having listened to a course of lectures by L. Eli de Beaumont .
Since 1835, began independent research. Started his work in one geological location in Wales . He studied the rocks and fossil Paleozoic fauna, which he devoted his entire life to.
Research in Russia
In 1836, Verney went on a trip to Eastern Europe in order to compare materials collected in Wales with new materials obtained in the journey. Down the Danube down to Turkey, through Moldova and Bessarabia came to Odessa and then to the Crimea . Philippe de Verneuil was one of the first to describe the tertiary deposits of the Crimea.
In 1839, along with scientists Sir R. Murchison and A. Sedgwick traveled to the Rhineland. In 1840, together with another scientist - A. K. Meyendorf , made a second trip to Russia. Arriving in St. Petersburg , Murchison and Verneuy enlisted the support of the Russian government and, above all, Finance Minister EF Kankrin and traveled to the north of Russia, then visited the outskirts of Moscow , Novgorod , Ryazan , Kostroma and other places in central Russia. In 1841, Murchison and Verneuil set off on a second joint journey through Russia, together with A. A. Keyserling and N.I. Koksharov . This time they studied the Moscow coal basin , traveled along the Volga to Kazan through Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod. Several times they crossed the Ural range, where in the Perm region Roderick Murchison discovered previously unknown fossils. Philippe de Verneuil studied in detail the fauna of these places and confirmed the discovery of a new system, which, together with Murchison, was decided to call "Permian."
In 1845, a two-volume monograph by R. Murchison, E. Verneuil and A. Keyserling was published “ In 1846–48 in translation and with additions by A. D. Ozersky was published in 14 issues of the Mining Journal, and in 1849 it was published as a separate publication, Geological Description of European Russia and the Ural Range . This work was the first report on the geology of Russia and for many years served as a guide for Russian geologists. Since 1847, Philip de Verneuil was a member of the Imperial Mineralogical Society in St. Petersburg, and in 1867 he was elected an honorary member. In 1856, he was elected a corresponding member of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences . For a long time, the French scientist maintained scientific contacts with colleagues from Russia.
US travel
In 1846, he traveled around the United States of America, where Verneuil's research confirmed the similarity of the Paleozoic sediments of Europe and America.
Works in Europe
Back in 1844, Verneuil began working with paleontological material from Spain, brought by other scientists. In 1849–1862, he repeatedly came to the Pyrenees, where he conducted geological studies in Spain and Portugal, together with Edward Colombe. In 1847, he studied the Silurian period of Bohemia, and in 1858–1864, he visited Vesuvia and the Santorin volcano of the same name island several times.
Three times he was elected president of the Geological Society of France (1840, 1853, 1867).
Died May 29, 1873 in the city of Paris .
Awards and prizes
In 1853, together with Adolf Arshiak, he was awarded the Wollaston Medal for "a great contribution to geology and especially for work on the Paleozoic fossils of the Rhine basin . "
Membership in organizations
In 1840, 1853 and 1867 he was president of the Geological Society of France [5] .
- 1844 - The Geological Society of London
- 1854 - Academy of Sciences of the Institute of France
- 1858 - Royal Academy of Sciences in Berlin
- 1860 - Royal Society of London
Memory
The 150th anniversary of the opening of the Perm system by Marchison and Verneuil was celebrated in 1991 by the Perm System of the Globe specially convened in Perm by the International Congress. [6] A special medal with portraits of Roderick Murchison, Philip de Verneuil and Alexander Keyserling was knocked out for the congress.
