Ian Shapiro ( born Ian Shapiro ; September 28, 1956 , Johannesburg , Gauteng , South Africa ) is a well-known American political scientist, Sterling professor of political science and director of the Yale University Macmillan Center, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Biography
Born in Johannesburg ( South Africa ). At 16, he moved to the UK, where he completed his general education. In 1978 he graduated from the University of Bristol , where he studied philosophy and political science. Then, to continue his education, he went to the USA. At Yale, he received degrees in political science (1980, master's degree; 1983, doctor). For his doctoral dissertation, “The Evolution of Rights in Liberal Political Thought,” received the 1985 Leo Strauss Award from the American Political Science Association. In 1987 he graduated from Yale Law School with a doctorate in law.
Since 1984, he has been working at the Department of Political Sciences at Yale University (since 1992, a professor, in 1999-2003 the head of the department, since 2005, a Sterling professor ).
