The painting depicts the Virgin Mary , hugging the infant Christ , and young John the Baptist gazing at them with reverence. A strict geometric shape and linear perspective, characteristic of the early Madonna of Raphael of the Florentine period, "Madonna in a chair" does not have. The use of warmer paints suggests the influence on the work of Titian and rival Raphael Sebastiano del Piombo .
"Madonna in a chair" was highly appreciated by Ingres , who placed her in several of his paintings - "Henry IV receives the Spanish ambassador", "Raphael and Fornarin", "Portrait of Monsieur Riviera" and "Portrait of Napoleon on the imperial throne" (in the carpet embroidery at the feet of the emperor ). Johann Zoffani also depicted “Madonna in a chair” among other paintings on the canvas “Uffizi Tribune”, written in the 70s of the XVIII century [1] .
