UFC 205: Alvarez vs. McGregor is the event of the organization of mixed martial arts Ultimate Fighting Championship , which took place on November 12, 2016 at the Madison Square Garden sports arena in the city of New York , New York , USA [1] .

Tournament position
This event will be the first for the UFC in New York . Also, this event will be the first for the UFC in the state of New York after a long ban on mixed martial arts, which was lifted in April 2016. The last UFC event in the state was UFC 7 in Buffalo in September 1995. [1]
The UFC has repeatedly tried to surpass the law prohibiting mixed martial arts in the state and once went to drastic measures. They announced the UFC 197 Madison Square Garden , although the ban was still in force. [2] However, it was later announced that federal judge Kimba M. Wood upheld the ban and the event had to be moved to Las Vegas , Nevada , USA [3] .
The main event of the tournament will be a fight for the UFC lightweight champion title between current champion Eddie Alvarez and current UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor [4] . In the history of UFC, this is the second time that two champions in different weight categories will fight for one of the belts. This first happened on UFC 94 in January 2009, when then -UFC welterweight champion Georges Saint-Pierre defended his title against UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn .
Initially, Eddie Alvarez was supposed to defend his title against the first number of the UFC lightweight rating by Habib Nurmagomedov , but on September 21 it was announced that Alvarez had missed the deadline for signing the contract for the fight and he was postponed to UFC 206 in December [5] . September 27, it became known that Conor McGregor will fight with Alvarez [4] .
In the second main fight of the evening, current UFC welterweight champion Tyrone Woodley will defend his title against five-time kickboxing world champion Stephen Thompson [6] .
The current champion of the UFC in the minimum weight Joanna Jendzheychik will defend her title against compatriot Karolina Kovalkevich [7] . Yendzheychik and Kovalkevich already met at an amateur level, then Yendzheychik won a painful victory [8] .
Thus, in one tournament there will be three fights for titles at once.
The fight between former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone was the first to be announced for this tournament [9] . However, a few days later, Robbie Lawler refused the fight, citing a lack of time to recover, after his last fight, in which he lost his title to Tyrone Woodley [10] . He was replaced by The Ultimate Fighter winner Calvin Gastelum, who was supposed to fight Jorge Masvidal the week before [11] .
The lightweight fight between Al Yakvinta and former UFC welterweight champion Believer Thiagu Alvis was originally supposed to take place at UFC 202 [12] , but was rescheduled for this event [13] . On September 19, Al Yakvinta announced that he was leaving the fight because he could not agree with the UFC on a new contract [14] . Replaced by Jim Miller [15] .
There will be two significant fights in the middle weight category. Tim Kennedy will meet with former UFC light heavyweight champion and middleweight debutant Rashad Evans [16] . Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman will meet with Olympic silver medalist Joel Romero [17]
At the Featherweight Championship, a fight will take place between former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar and Jeremy Stevens [18] .
Habib Nurmagomedov was originally supposed to fight Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title, now he will fight with Michael Johnson [19] .
