Biography

Born on June 15, 1948 in Cuneo, he graduated from the Technical Lyceum of Commerce named after Luigi Einaudi in Turin together with Elsa Fornero . Initially, he was part of the “ Il Manifesto Group”, which was committed to radical leftist unions, but in 1975 became an activist of the Italian Communist Party . As a functionary of the Federation of Workers in the Metalworking Industry ( FIOM ) and VICT trade unions, he rose to the position of chairman of the Chamber of Labor in Turin and deputy head of the union , and in 1991 he became the national secretary of the union. In 2001, broke with the leader of the WICT, Sergio Cofferati (after the failure of the center-left in the parliamentary elections, he sought the election of Giovanni Berlinguera as the national secretary of the left democrats ) and supported Piero Fassino , who led the party, at the Pesaro congress [1] [2] .

In 2006 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of Italy and on May 3, 2006 he entered the Olive Tree - Democratic Party faction.

From May 17, 2006 to May 8, 2008, he was Minister of Labor and Social Security in the second government of Prodi (for the first two days, the post was named “Minister of Labor and Social Policy” on May 17 and 18, 2006) [3] .

In 2008, he was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies, on May 5, he joined the Democratic Party faction, on June 10, 2010, he joined the faction's board.

In December 2012, he took part in the primaries of the Democratic Party in Turin for the right to nominate a candidacy from the party in the parliamentary elections in February 2013 and won, collecting 5998 votes [4] .

In 2013, he was re-elected to parliament, and on May 7, 2013 he headed the Labor Commission of the Chamber of Deputies [5] .

Collaborates in the weekly Gli Altri and in the Italian version of the Huffington Post . In 2013, together with and Vannino Kitty, he launched a campaign calling on leftist political advocates to engage primarily in the development of new ideas, rather than discussions around the figure of the leader of the Democratic Party. In the election of a new national secretary that same year, he supported the candidacy of Gianni Kuperlo , having diverged from his views with his former ally Piero Fassino, who spoke in favor of Matteo Renzi [1] .

In June 2015, he became one of the 70 parliamentarians from the Democratic Party who joined the Sinistra è cambiamento (Leftist Change) movement, which, without denying support to the Renzi government (the group includes acting Minister of Agriculture Maurizio Martina ), put forward its own a reform program of more leftist content [6] .

He went to the 2018 elections in a single-mandate constituency in Terni , which was considered statistically reliable “red”, but remained in third place after center-right Raffaele Nevi (37.45%) and candidate for the Five Star Movement Lucho Ricchetti (28.83%) [7 ] .
