Nyctanassa is a genus of heron birds from the Americas, especially (but not exclusively) in warm coastal areas. There is one living and one recently extinct species in the genus. Previously, they were included in the genus Nycticorax .

The name comes from the ancient Greek words “night” and “lady” or “queen”. The nightlife of the yellow-headed heron and its beauty were implied.
