Papa Vemba ( fr. Papa Wemba , real name Jules Xingu Vembadiyo Pene Kikumba ; June 14, 1949 , Lubefu, Kasai, Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo ) - April 24, 2016 , Abidjan [6] ) - Congolese pop and folk singer the composer, one of the greatest music figures of Africa of the 20th century and popularizers of African music, who had the nickname “King of Rumba” and performed works in the genres of Congolese Rumba, Sykyus and Nombolo.

Biography
He was born in the family of a customs officer and a professional mourner who performed traditional funeral songs at a funeral [7] . As a child, he sang in the church choir, from 1969 he was a member of the musical group Zaiko Langa Langa, from 1974 he performed in the group Isife Lokolé, in 1977 he founded his own band, Viva La Musica, performing songs in French and Lingala ; in the early 1980s, he moved with his group to Paris , and also began touring the world, sometimes speaking with British singer Peter Gabriel, with whom he recorded the album Emotion in 1995.
He was very popular in DR Congo and the Republic of Congo not only as a singer, but also as a “trendsetter”, was an activist of the movement of fashionistas and fans of the elegant style of “ La Sape ” (“Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes”). In 2004, he participated in organizing a channel for the illegal migration of Africans to Europe, for which he was sentenced to 30 months in prison (of which only 4 went to a penitentiary) [8] . He died on April 24, 2016, after suddenly fainted on stage during a concert in Abidjan. He was buried on May 2, 2016 in Kinshasa [9] .
