Aurora (premium)

The Aurora Prize is one of the projects of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative ^[4] . The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative, created on behalf of all Armenians who survived the Genocide and in gratitude to their saviors, seeks to give modern heroes the opportunity to continue to help those who are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, thereby continuing the global baton of goodness ^[5] . The initiative supports and promotes projects whose creators, at the risk of themselves, save the most vulnerable members of our society. This plan is being implemented through a number of programs: Aurora Prize, Aurora Dialogues, Aurora Humanitarian Index, Gratitude Projects and 100 Lives Initiative.

The award was officially presented to the public on March 10, 2015 in New York .

The Aurora Prize is named after Arshaluys Martikyan (Aurora Mardiganian), who managed to survive during the Armenian Genocide and escape from slavery. Having traveled half the world, she settled in the United States. There Arshaluys changed her name to Aurora Mardiganian and wrote the book “ Torn Armenia ”. In it, the girl spoke about the monstrous trials that fell to her lot. A very successful film was soon put on the book, in which Aurora played the main role. Long-term rental of paintings in the United States played a huge role in informing the public about the Armenian Genocide . The prize is also named after Aurora , the ancient Roman goddess of the morning dawn, since one of the goals of the Aurora prize is to shed light on the heroic activities of those who fearlessly help those in distress ^[6] .

Gratitude in action is the concept that underlies the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative. For many survivors who owe their salvation to the indifference of others, the best way to express their appreciation is to do similar worthy deeds ^[7] .

The co-founders of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative created Aurora as the embodiment of the principle of gratitude in action, and they strive to inspire those who received support in difficult times to express their gratitude in practice by helping someone else. “So we resist evil and violence,” says Vartan Gregorian, one of the co-founders of the award ^[8] .

The Aurora Prize was conceived and created by Nubar Afeyan, Vartan Gregorian and Ruben Vardanyan . The award was established with the goal of “paying tribute to those who risk their own security out of a heightened sense of humanity and social responsibility, and also make a tangible contribution to the preservation of human lives” ^[9] .

Dr. Tom Catena is a surgeon, a veteran, a Catholic missionary, a world-famous humanitarian activist, and the first chairman of the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative ^[10] .

As Chairman of Aurora, Dr. Catena raises awareness among policy makers, humanitarian organizations, professionals, and ordinary people around the world about the initiative by telling them about gratitude in action.

Dr. Katena, the founder of Mother Mercy Hospital in the war-ravaged Nubian mountains of Sudan , has devoted the last ten years of his life to providing medical care to a population of this region the size of Austria . Tom Catena is the only physician resident there.

Nominations

Every year, humanitarian organizations and members of the public are invited to nominate people who have made an exceptional contribution to the preservation of human lives and the promotion of the ideas of humanism , despite significant obstacles in their path ^[11] .
Any person or group of people who have committed an outstanding deed to save others can be nominated for the Aurora Prize. You cannot nominate yourself ^[12] .

Screening Process

All proposed candidates are carefully considered. The selection process is controlled by independent auditors. The final selection of the finalists and the Aurora Prize winner rests with the independent Aurora Prize Selection Panel, whose members evaluate all candidates for compliance with the following criteria ^[13] :

• Courage , manifested in a willingness to go beyond the scope of official duties and put oneself at substantial risk in order to save others;
• Resolve to actively participate in the salvation of others, as well as devotion to moral values ​​such as honesty, freedom, justice, responsibility and compassion.
• The impact , manifested in long-term results that saved more lives, as well as in positive changes in local communities, countries or globally, and in a positive example for others ^{[12] [14]} .

Selection Panel

The co-chairs of the first Selection Panel for the award were the late Eli Wiesel , Nobel Prize winner , and George Clooney , Academy Award winner, actor and philanthropist. The Commission also included the twice-elected President of Costa Rica, Oscar Arias , Nobel Laureate, human rights lawyer and first woman judge in Iran, Shirin Ebadi , Nobel Laureate and Executive Director of Women, Peace and Security - Africa (WIPSEN- Africa) Leima Gbovi , former Irish President Mary Robinson , human rights specialist Hina Gilani , former Foreign Secretary of Australia and honorary president of the International Crisis Group Gareth Evans, and president of Carnegie Corporation in New York ke Vartan Gregorian ^[15] .

Nominations

Acceptance of nominations for the Aurora Award 2016 opened on July 1 and closed on October 1, 2015. 186 applications were received from 27 countries. A total of 113 unique candidates were nominated ^[16] .

Finalists

• Dr. Tom Katena is the only physician who resides and works in the region on the border with South Sudan who provides medical care to more than half a million local people. Despite the bombings for which the Government of the Sudan is responsible, Dr. Katena does not leave the hospital grounds so that patients can always find him. TIME magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people of 2015 ^[17] .
• Marguerite Barankits of Shalom House and the REMA Hospital in Burundi saved thousands of lives and took care of orphans and refugees during the civil war in Burundi. When the war broke out, the Tutsi Barankits tried to hide the 72 closest Hutu neighbors in order to save them. However, they were found and killed, forcing the Barankits to attend the execution. After this terrifying incident, she began her work in rescuing children and refugees and organizing their care. Marguerite Barankits saved about 30 thousand children, and in 2008 opened a hospital, where today more than 80 thousand patients have received medical care.
• Seda Gulam Fatima tirelessly struggles to eradicate enslavement in Pakistan , one of the last remaining forms of modern slavery . Fatima freed thousands of Pakistanis, including almost 21 thousand children who had to work in brick factories to pay off the debts of their parents. Due to her activities, she had to survive several attempts on her life and numerous beatings.
• Bernard Kinvey became a priest at the age of 19, after the death of his father and four sisters, who during life had to endure a lot of suffering. After taking office, Kinwi left his hometown of Lome , the capital of Togo , and moved to the Central African Republic , where he led the Catholic mission. In 2012, a civil war broke out in the country. In the midst of the conflict, Father Kinwi granted asylum and provided medical assistance to representatives of both warring parties. Thus, he saved hundreds of people from persecution and death ^[18] .

Award Ceremony

The first Aurora Prize ceremony for awakening humanism took place on April 24, 2016 at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex in Yerevan ^[19] .

The ceremony was conducted by opera singer Asmik Papyan and journalist and writer David Ignatius .

Videos

The award ceremony was opened by the animated film "Aurora", produced and directed by Eric Nazaryan. The song “Aurora's Dream”, written by Serge Tankyan specifically for the soundtrack, sounded in the picture ^[20] . Andrei Loshak shot several small documentary videos for the ceremony telling about the achievements of each finalist ^[21] .

Musical and dance design

The ceremony was accompanied by live music performed by the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia under the direction of Sergey Smbatyan . The ceremonial theme for the ceremony was written by Stepan Shakaryan . The prize figurine, created by Manvel Matevosyan, was presented to guests during the performance of the Ballet 2021 foundation artists who performed a fragment of the ballet “Two Suns” directed by choreographer Rudolf Kharatyan . The dance number was accompanied by the music of Avet Terteryan and Arno Babajanyan . The State Youth Orchestra of Armenia also performed an excerpt from the Second Symphony by Aram Khachaturian (“Symphony with the Bell”). Soprano Asmik Papyan sang “Lullaby” by Barsegh Kanachyan . At the end of the ceremony, the song “Pour toi, Arménie” (“For You, Armenia”) was performed by Gevorg Hakobyan and the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia ^[20] .

Laureate

The first Aurora Prize was awarded to Marguerite Barankits , founder of the Shalom House orphanage and the REMA hospital in Burundi , which saved thousands of lives during the civil war in that country and also helped orphans and refugees.
Barankits devoted her whole life to caring for children affected by violence, providing them with shelter and helping them get an education. When a civil war erupted in Burundi , Barankits, a Tutsi by nationality, tried to hide 72 Hutu neighbors in the hope of saving them from their pursuers. The fugitives were discovered and executed right in front of Margrerit Barankits in front of his eyes.
After this terrible tragedy, which put her faith in humanity to a serious test, Barankits began to help orphans and refugees. For 20 years, Marguerite rescued about 30,000 children whom she educated, and in 2008 a hospital opened with her efforts, where by 2016 more than 80,000 patients had received medical care ^{[22] [23] [24] [25]} .

Organizations

Marguerite Baranquits chose the following organizations to receive the $ 1 million award as the Aurora Prize 2016: Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg Foundation, Jean-Francois Petersburg Foundation (JFP Foundation) and Bridderlech Deelen Foundation ^[27] .

Cash Reward

Having become the Aurora Prize winner, Marguerite Barankits was awarded a grant of $ 100 thousand and decided to share the accompanying prize with a prize of $ 1 million between organizations that deal with child poverty and provide assistance to and rehabilitation of underage refugees and orphans more accessible ^[28] .

Award Figurine

The Aurora Prize figurine for the awakening of humanism was created by Manvel Matevosyan and is called "To Eternity" ^[29] .

The 2017 Aurora Prize Selection Panel included George Clooney (co-chair), Vartan Gregorian , Oscar Arias , Shirin Ebadi , Gareth Evans, Leima Gbovi , Hina Gilani , Mary Robertson ^{[30] [31]} .

Nominations

The reception of nominations for the Aurora Prize - 2017 opened on June 1 and closed on September 9, 2016. 558 applications were received from 66 countries. A total of 254 unique candidates were nominated ^[32] .

Finalists

The finalists of 2017 were:

• Fartun Adan and Ilvad Elman ^[33] , the founders of the Elman Center for Peace and Human Rights in Somalia , are a mother and daughter whose activities in the field of protecting human rights and women's rights , strengthening peace, developing and rehabilitating child soldiers are a constant danger.
• Jamilya Afghanistan ^[34] , Chair of the Organization for Capacity Building and Development of the Education System, Nur ( Afghanistan ) is a victim of childhood polio , who was lucky to learn to read and who now eradicates female illiteracy and helps girls and women to get an education and also carries out educational work among Muslim leaders .
• Dr. Tom Catena , a physician at the Mother of Mercy Hospital in the Nubian Mountains of Sudan, is a surgeon and missionary from the United States Catholic Church who has for many years been the only physician who has consistently provided medical care to more than half a million people in a remote and war-ravaged region and performed more than 1,000 operations a year .
• Muhammad Darwish ^[35] , a doctor at a field hospital in Madai, Syria , a dentist-trained student who returned to his hometown and began to provide the population with full medical care, including procedures and filling out detailed medical records of patients, many of whom were children with injuries from the ongoing armed conflict in the region. All this helped to draw public attention to the besieged city.
• Dr. Denis Mukwege ^[36] , gynecologist surgeon and founder of the Panzi hospital in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is an obstetrician who has become a gynecologist surgeon and provides physical, psychological and legal assistance to more than 50,000 victims of sexual violence living in a war-ravaged country, as well as seeking to find guilty and bring them to justice ^{[37] [38]} .

Премия «Аврора», созданная от лица всех выживших во время Геноцида армян и в знак благодарности их спасителям, назвала следующие имена:

• Господин Чжо Ла Аун, юрист и активист народа рохинджа, Мьянма. Мусульманин-рохинджа Чжо Ла Аун отсидел в общей сложности 12 лет за мирные протесты против систематической дискриминации и насилия в отношении его сообщества. Теперь он использует знание законов в борьбе за равенство и соблюдение прав рохинджа, а также стремится обеспечить своему народу доступ к более качественному образованию. Чжо Ла Уан номинировал международные организации, оказывающие беженцам в Мьянме медицинскую помощь и поддержку.
• Брат Эктор Томас Гонсалес Кастильо, основатель приюта La 72, Мексика. Брат Томас, монах-францисканец, помог более чем 50 000 мигрантов из Центральной Америки, предоставив им кров, еду, воду, психологическую и юридическую поддержку. • Госпожа Сунита Кришнан, соучредитель организации Prajwala, Индия. Жертва группового изнасилования, Сунита Кришнан нашла в пережитом травмирующем опыте источник силы: теперь она спасает жертв торговли людьми и вовлеченных в проституцию женщин, помогая им вернуться к нормальной жизни. Лауреат

Третью ежегодную премию «Аврора» в размере 1,1 млн долларов получил адвокат Чжо Ла Аун, отмеченный за свою преданность делу борьбы за права рохинджа в Мьянме, в том числе их права на образование. За свою деятельность активист неоднократно подвергался преследованиям и притеснениям ^[49] .

Церемония вручения премии

Премия «Аврора» была вручена в третий раз 10 июня 2018 года в столице Армении Ереване ^[50] . Церемония вручения премии стала кульминацией специальной программы мероприятий, которые прошли с 8 по 10 июня ^[51] .

Диалоги «Аврора» ( англ. Aurora Dialogues ) — это платформа для проведения содержательных дискуссий о самых насущных проблемах, стоящих перед мировым сообществом, в работе которой принимают участие ведущие гуманитарные деятели, исследователи, филантропы, предприниматели и гражданские активисты.

Диалоги «Аврора» — 2016 прошли 23 апреля 2016 года в Институте древних рукописей Матенадаран в Ереване, Армения. Их участники, среди которых были члены Отборочной комиссии премии «Аврора» Хина Джилани , Ширин Эбади и Гарет Эванс , поделились своим мнением о глобальной проблеме беженцев, роли женщин в гуманитарном сообществе и влиянии СМИ на привлечение внимания мира к гуманитарным кризисам ^{[56] [57] [58]} .

Диалоги «Аврора» — 2017

Диалоги «Аврора» — 2017 прошли 27-28 мая в Ереване, Армения, и 4-5 декабря в Берлине, Германия.

27-28 мая 2017 года ведущие гуманитарные деятели, филантропы, представители бизнес-кругов и СМИ собрались в Армении, чтобы принять участие в Диалогах «Аврора», международной платформе для обсуждения наиболее актуальных гуманитарных проблем и самых эффективных способов их решения. В программе были заявлены самые разные темы, в том числе истоки проблемы беженцев и ее катастрофические последствия, а также анализ того, как возможные способы ее решения, от общих усилий гуманитарных организаций до образовательных иницитатив и проектов социальной интеграции, помогают облегчить положение людей из группы риска ^[59] .

Диалоги «Аврора» – 2017 в Берлине под названием «Миллионы в движении – время развития и интеграции» прошли 4 и 5 декабря 2017 года в представительстве Фонда имени Роберта Боша в столице Германии ^[60] . Конференция позволила оценить масштабы глобального миграционного кризиса и роль разнообразных участников процесса в обеспечении изменений к лучшему, а также рассмотреть самые эффективные решения проблем ^[61] .

Гуманитарный индекс «Аврора» ( англ. Aurora Humanitarian Index ) — это специальный обзор, посвященный общественному восприятию важнейших гуманитарных проблем. В тексте Гуманитарного индекса «Аврора» дается оценка отношению международной общественности к социальной ответственности и эффективности гуманитарного вмешательства, а также анализируются факторы, побуждающие людей вмешиваться в ситуацию в интересах других.

Исследование проводится каждый год в ряде стран, а его заключения презентуются в апреле в ходе Диалогов «Аврора», международной платформы, где ведущие гуманитарные деятели могут обмениваться мнениями.

Гуманитарный индекс «Аврора» — 2016

Впервые представленное публике в 2016 году исследование представляет собой специальный обзор, посвященный общественному восприятию важнейших гуманитарных проблем. В опросе приняли участие 4600 человек из шести стран. Результаты исследования показали серьезный разрыв между реальностью глобальной проблемы беженцев и её общественным восприятием, что стало ясно благодаря ответам респондентов на вопросы о социальной ответственности и необходимости международного гуманитарного вмешательства.

Исследование проводилось агентством Edelman Intelligence с марта по апрель 2016 года ^{[62] [63] [64]} .

Гуманитарный индекс «Аврора» — 2017

Исследование проводилось на основе опроса, в котором участвовали почти 6,5 тысячи человек из 12 стран (Франции, Германии, Великобритании, США, Аргентины, Армении, Ирана, Японии, Кении, Ливана, России и Турции). Особое внимание в нем было уделено вопросам миграции и интеграции. Согласно результатам индекса, интерес к гуманитарным проблемам и готовность участвовать в их решении в мире резко снизились ^[65] .

Результаты Гуманитарного индекса «Аврора» — 2017 подкрепляются тем фактом, что только 9% респондентов убеждены, что их личный вклад может помочь решить глобальный кризис беженцев. Вот уже второй год подряд опрошенные называют терроризм главной гуманитарной проблемой (с этим согласны 63%) ^[66] . Далее следуют разрыв между богатыми и бедными, голод, изменение климата и вынужденная миграция.

Проекты благодарности «Аврора» — это гуманитарные и образовательные инициативы, направленные на помощь детям, беженцам и другим людям из группы риска по всему миру. С помощью этих проектов потомки выживших в годы Геноцида армян стремятся выразить благодарность тем, кто помогал жертвам этой ужасной трагедии спастись. Проекты благодарности «Аврора» включают в себя образовательные программы, стипендии студентам и гранты гуманитарным инициативам, а также содействуют информированию общественности об усилиях различных гуманитарных организаций.

В рамках совместной программы с фондом Near East Foundation стипендии получат 100 находящихся в группе риска молодых людей из стран Ближнего Востока ^[67] . Поддержка будет оказана в первую очередь тем, кто пострадал от вооруженных конфликтов , был вынужден покинуть родной дом или лишился средств к существованию. Восьмилетняя стипендиальная программа реализуется c 2015 по 2023 год (в память о Геноциде армян, продолжавшемся с 1915 по 1923 год), а ее участники смогут получить образование мирового уровня в школах глобальной сети United World College (UWC), включая расположенный в Армении международный колледж UWC Dilijan .

В программу входят две именные стипендии: одна из них, названная в честь Ламии Аджи Башар , присуждается студентам езидского происхождения ^[68] , а вторую, названную в честь Амаль Клуни , получают студентки из Ливана , продемонстрировавшие интерес к теме защиты прав человека ^[69] .

В рамках другой стипендиальной программы, созданной совместно с Фондом Scholae Mundi Armenia, студенты из Сирии, Ирака, Ливана, Иордании и Египта смогут получить гранты на обучение в Американском университете Армении ^[70] .

«100 жизней» ( англ. 100 Lives ) — это глобальная инициатива, у истоков которой стоят трагические события Геноцида армян . Соучредителями проекта выступили предприниматель и венчурный капиталист Нубар Афеян , президент Фонда Карнеги в Нью-Йорке Вартан Грегорян и предприниматель и филантроп Рубен Варданян ^[71] . Инициатива «100 жизней» собирает и публикует истории выживших по время Геноцида армян и их спасителей. Проект опирается на научные исследования, личные воспоминания, а также использует рассказы читателей, которые они присылают на сайт проекта ^[72] .

Гуманитарную инициативу «Аврора» создали в 2015 году три единомышленника, решивших отдать дань памяти жертвам Геноцида армян, поддерживая проекты, чествующие их спасителей. С тех пор к проекту присоединились более 250 человек и организаций, вдохновленные намерением воплотить в действие благодарность целого народа ^[73] .
