Vel is a river in the Arkhangelsk region , the left tributary of the Vaga river (the Northern Dvina basin ).

Length - 223 km, basin area - 5390 km², average annual water discharge 47.7 m³ / s (village Balamutovskaya).
Geography
Vel originates from marshes in the western part of the Konosha Upland south of the village of Konosha . In the upper reaches it flows in a weakly expressed valley, lower in a wide valley, where the river winds heavily, the valley narrows to the lower reaches. The main direction of the current is east. In the upper reaches of the coast, they are wooded and boggy, in the lower reaches more populated. Previously, the river was rafting.
At the mouth of the Shonosha are the village of Ust-Shonosha and the village of Ust-Shonosha , at the mouth of the Yeluga - the village of Khozmino , at the confluence of the river Vel into Vagu, the city of Velsk is located.
Etymology
In the Komi language, “vel” is “pretty, decent” [3] . Swedish researcher G. Johansson offers a translation from Sanskrit - “border, limit, river bank” [4] .
