Age structure

Age and gender pyramid Maldives, 2006—2014

The general shape of the pyramid slightly changed in 2014 compared to 2006, an increase in the birth rate led to an increase in the proportion of children. The age and gender composition of the Maldives in 2014 still resembles one of the developing countries with a wide base, a relatively large proportion of people in the age categories (under 30 years old), and a relatively small proportion of people in the older age categories (over 60 years old). Despite this, the able-bodied population still accounts for a relatively large proportion of the population. [one]

Languages

Divekhi , the Indo-Aryan language, which has some similarities with Elu, the ancient Sinhala language and written in specialized Arabic script ( Tana ), is the official language and is spoken by almost the entire population. English is a second language.

Religion

Sunni Islam is the state religion. Historically, the Maldives was converted to Islam from Buddhism in the 12th century. According to the 1997 constitution, religious freedom is limited, which is why Islam is the only religion adopted publicly. Consequently, the vast majority of the population professes adherence to Islam, 98.4% reported as of 2010. [6]
