Biography
Sergey Slonimsky was born in Leningrad in the family of the writer Mikhail Slonimsky and Ida Isaakovna Kaplan-Ingel.
Engaged in composition at the age of 11 years, privately with V. Ya. Shebalin . In 1945-1950 he studied the piano with S. I. Savshinsky and composition with B. A. Arapov and S. Ya. Wolfenzon , then at the L. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Moscow State University with O. A. Yevlakhov (composition ) and V.V. Nielsen (piano). In 1958 he graduated from graduate school under the guidance of T. G. Ter-Martirosyan , from the next year to the present day he has been teaching musical and theoretical disciplines at the conservatory, since 1967 - composition. He took part in folklore expeditions, collected Russian folk songs.
“In August [1963], together with the folklorist N. Kotikova and sound engineer A. Gadateli, I visited the Pskov region. Here we recorded folk songs. This month I had a lot of interesting meetings, vivid impressions! For a long time, the wonderful art of the singers Anastasia Filippovna Ivanova from the village of Vlasovo and Praskovya Mikhailovna Sergeeva from the village of Cheremukhino was remembered. Vladimir Kashtanov, an amateur composer, an employee of the Great Russian Flax Factory, can be called a real national talent. We have collected about a hundred very interesting, as it seems to me, songs. Many of them are very original in melody, unusual in their figurative content. Often they are difficult to decipher, because they do not “fit” into the framework of the “temperamental” - twelve-stage scale. Today, I was just deciphering one of these “difficult to give” songs. Later, I intend to make several arrangements for the songs we recorded - for voice and piano, accompanied by an orchestra. ” [3]
Candidate of art history (1963), professor (1976), member of the USSR Insurance Committee .
As a teacher, he brought up many famous Soviet and Russian composers.
