He spent his youth in Dessau , where in 1863 he debuted as a pianist. He received his first piano lessons at the age of 10. In 1866 - 1867 studied at the Dresden Conservatory with Adolf Blasman (piano) and Adolf Reichel (counterpoint). Then he worked as a conductor in Posen and Lübeck , in 1869 - 1873 . in Weimar , then in Neustrelitz, and finally from 1882 until the end of his life he served as the court bandmaster in Dessau.

His main works are: oratorios Die Grablegung Christi, Die Zerstörung Jerusalems, Judith; the operas Mirjam ( 1871 ), Iwein ( 1879 ), Gudrun ( 1882 ), overtures Im Frühling, Sophonisbe, Siegesouverture, 5 symphonies, orchestra. suites, piano quartet and quintet, string quartet and sextet, concerts for violin, oboe, cello.
