Story

A junta has created a concentration camp for political prisoners “Santa Esperanza” (from the Spanish - “Holy Hope”) on the site of an abandoned working village located in the desert at the foot of the Andes in an unnamed South American country. The 120 people contained in it have very different outlooks on life, but in order to escape from it or at least let them know about their existence in this refuge completely cut off from the outside world, they are forced to unite. This, in particular, is facilitated in every way by Felicindo ( Noreika ), who has been appointed a senior in the barracks, trying to apply knowledge about the terrain of the elderly Don Lorenzo ( Kadochnikov ), who has lived in that village almost all his life.

Two escape attempts fail, but in the end, the prisoners manage to seize the moment and gain access to the radio station, which makes it possible for Felicindo to inform the underground organization in which he was a member of the existence of the camp. But despite this, the efforts are in vain: the rioters in the building of the radio station die during the assault on the camp’s garrison by the soldiers, the uprising is crushed, and the surviving prisoners are transferred to another camp, leaving Santa Esperanza empty again.

Making a movie

Intentions to make a film about the camp of political prisoners “Santa Esperanza”, similar to the real camps organized in Chile, Sebastian Alarcon voiced in early 1977 [9] . According to Alarkon, when working on the script for the film, together with Vladimir Amlinsky, they used a large documentary base, in addition, Alarcon repeatedly consulted with representatives of the Chilean anti-fascist movement (including Luis Corvalan ), who had their own experience in camps like the one described in the film [3] .

The picture was shot in 1978 in the mountains near Koktebel [10] .

The film was the first major cinematic work of stuntman Alexander Inshakov , who took part in its creation as both an artist and a stunt director at the invitation of the Soviet popularizer of karate Alexei Shturmin [11] [12] . According to Inshakov, his subsequent film career was greatly facilitated by his acquaintance on the set of "Santa Esperanza" with assistant to the actors Galina Babicheva [13] .

Critical Reaction

The picture is called among other Chilean films of the same period, which, together with the critics, demonstrate a rare development of national cinema in conditions of almost complete movement of film production abroad [14] [15] .

Rewards

The film was awarded an honorary diploma of the VIII International Festival of Films on Freedom and Revolution in the Yugoslav city of [16] .
