Edibe Sozen ( Edibe Sozen Yavuz , born January 1, 1961 [1] ) is a Turkish sociologist and politician [2] .

Biography
Born on January 1, 1961 in Sivas in the family of Dogan Sösen and his wife Nevzade, Edibe Sösen is the granddaughter of Nurettin Sösen , a Turkish politician who was a member of the Republican People’s Party and served as the mayor of Istanbul [3] [4] .
In 1982, Edibe Sösen graduated from the University of Marmara with a bachelor’s degree [5] . She then received a master’s and Ph.D. degree from Istanbul University. She completed her studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Sozen [6] .
Since 1994, she taught sociology at Istanbul University. Edibe Sösen also taught in the USA at the universities of Utah, Arizona and Chicago, and in German Cologne. She served as vice dean at Istanbul University [6] .
She has published eight books [7] .
In 2006, Edibe Sösen left her teaching career and became involved in politics. She joined the Justice and Development Party .
In 2007, she was elected a member of the Great National Assembly from the silt of Istanbul [8] .
In 2008, Sösen introduced a law on the protection of youth. According to this law, minors were forbidden to enter restaurants after 22:00, nightclubs were supposed to close at midnight, all schools were supposed to create places for prayers, and all buyers of pornographic magazines [9] [10] [11] were also to be kept records. When reports of this law hit the press, he was widely criticized. Sözen stated that this law was developed on the basis of similar laws existing in German law, and the adoption of this law is an attempt to bring Turkey to European standards [12] . The Turkish Constitutional Court stated that the law is a threat to secularism and stated that it could deprive the party of justice and the development of state funding. After the chairman of the Justice and Development Party, Recep Erdogan, criticized the law and a number of other party leaders distanced themselves from this law [13] , Sozen stated that the law on the protection of youth will not be submitted to parliament [14] [15] [16] .
In 2012, she was elected to the Party Central Committee at a party congress [8] .
In 2014, Sozen ran for the post of head of Maltepe [2] [8] [17] , but lost the election to an opponent from the Republican People’s Party [18] .
