The 1843 graduation at West Point American Military Academy gave the country 16 generals. 21 graduates of this year became participants in the civil war , 4 of them fought on the side of the South, 17 on the side of the North. This year’s graduates included U.S. Army High Commander-in-Chief and future U.S. President Ulysses Grant and Corps General William Franklin. Samuel French wrote that the graduation of 1843 had two features: all graduates who lived to 1861 took part in the Civil War and all but one rose to the rank of general [1] .
The superintendent of the Academy in 1843 was Richard Delafield .
