Events
On October 2, it was reported that a major battle had broken out in the city of Heath. ISIS stated that it had taken control of the city, but pro-government soldiers said the battle was still ongoing. [3] However, the next day, the Iraqi government said that 90% of the city was not under its control. ISIL flags were reported to be developing over government buildings, including government offices and police stations. According to a statement by the Iraqi government, the attack began after a suicide bomber attacked the city. Also, the militants seized many tanks and military equipment. Also, according to unconfirmed reports, they left the city as a result of coalition bombing [4] .
On October 5, a suicide bomber blew up vehicles filled with explosives near a checkpoint at the entrance to the city, killing 3 and injuring 5 people [5] . Also, a terrorist attack occurred in the eastern part of the city, which resulted in the death of captain Mohammed Saad [6] .
On October 13, ISIS took control of an important military base in the region after Iraqi forces left it. Coalition bombing failed to deter the militants, and many refugees fled their homes. Also, 50% of the population fled the city not only because of the militants, but also because of the coalition bombing [7] . They fled to Assad Air Base, where many officers were stationed. ISIS captured a lot of equipment, including 3 tanks and other vehicles [8] .
Refugee Crisis
During and after the fighting, many people fled their Hita and other places in the province of Anbar. According to UN officials, more than 180,000 people lost their place of residence due to fighting, and many fled to government-controlled areas of Ramadi . Many needed food, blankets and medicines [9] .
War Crimes
After the fall of the city, ISIS executed several people from the Albu Nimr tribe for fighting against them. Many civilians were abducted from their homes, and their fate is unknown. However, one can obviously assume that they are dead. Not far from the city, a mass grave was discovered, in which 200 dead bodies lay, another 48 soldiers were carried along the streets before they were executed. Despite this, the Albu Nimr tribe stated that it would try to return the city [10] .
Consequences
On April 14, 2016, the Iraqi government regained control of the city.
