History
At the KBA (1999-2004)
For two seasons, the team played under the name Vangard Aoshen ; the team arose as a result of the merger of two Beijing clubs: Wangard and Aoshen. Sometimes the Chinese version of Canvey Aoshen was used instead. Soon, the team began to be called Beijing Aoshen or Beijing Olympic .
The Wangard team had a long history. The team was founded in the 1950s and has had some success in the domestic championship during these years. The team played their first CBA season in 1995-1996, but in the debut season they finished the last of 12 teams and dropped out of the championship. Meanwhile, Aoshen was founded in 1997 as Beijing Aosheng , and in 1998 the team won the second division and received a ticket to the KBA . Soon after, the team represented China in the Asian Champions Cup and won it.
Beijin Aoshen spent his debut season at the KBA in the 1998–1999 season. The key player of the team was Ma Jian . An unprecedented step for the club was the appointment of a woman coach, Li Signa , who thus became the very first woman coach in the KBA . But soon after five games, she was fired and replaced by American coach Mike McGee , who thereby became the first foreign coach in the KBA . Despite this, the team finished the championship in the semifinals, losing to the Bay Rockets .
The following season, the team merged with Vangard and finished the championship in sixth place. In the 2000-2001 season, they continued to fight for the championship. In the middle of the season, the main star of the team, Ma Jian, was expelled from the team. After that, the team finished the championship in seventh place.
In the 2003–2004 season, the team finished the regular season with 7 out of 12 teams. In the quarter-finals of the playoffs, the team lost to Jiangsu Dragons .
Suspension from the KBA
On May 17, 2004, due to the refusal to let the Sunya Yue youth team gather for training, the Beijing Olympics team was temporarily suspended from the KBA . On May 25, 2004, KBA announced that the winner of the second division of 2004 will play in the championship instead of Olympians . The winner of the second division that year was Yunnan Bulls .
At this time, the Olympians in Taiwan played friendly matches with the teams of the second division [1] .
In ABA (2005-2009)
In the 2005–2006 season, KBA expanded the championship to 16 teams. That year, Olympians entered negotiations to return to the league. Negotiations failed, and only 15 teams played in the league that season [2] .
Thereafter, Beijing Olympians joined the newly created ABA during the 2005–06 season.
The team played its first season in the Spencer Haywood Division, in the Red Conference. The team played home games not in Beijing , but in Maywood . In the 2006-2007 season, the team moved to the Felix Event Center in Azus. The following year, the team played home games in Singapore . In the 2008–2009 season, the team returned to California , this time to the city of Rosemead .
In the new league, the team was able to go through the quarterfinals of the playoffs only once. This happened in the 2006-2007 season where the club reached the finals of its conference. In the final, the team lost to Texas Tikunsu .
In PBLZP (2009—2010)
After the 2008–2009 season, the ABA Club announced the move to the West Coast Pro League Basketball League (PBLZP) . Since PBLZP is the spring basketball league, the team continued to play in the ABA , ending it in the winter.
Club
Beijing Olympians was officially disbanded on December 4, 2013 . The announcement of the disbandment was not a surprise after the purchase of the club by the controversial and mysterious Chinese real estate magnate and billionaire named Lee Su , who suddenly died in mid-September due to acute myocardial infarction at the age of 55 years [3] .
