Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga

Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga - the title of the ruling bishop of the St. Petersburg diocese and the head of the St. Petersburg metropolis .

Modern full title: Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga and Holy Trinity Alexander Nevsky Lavra, Sacred Archimandrite [1] .

History

Over the entire period of the existence of the diocese, the title of the diocesan bishop has repeatedly changed, which, most often, was associated with an increase or, conversely, a decrease in the church area under his control. In its current form, the title first appeared in 1892 , with the appointment of Palladium Raev to the department. It should be noted that St. Petersburg hierarchs began to receive the rank of Metropolitan only from the beginning of the 19th century . The church region received the metropolitan status in connection with the inclusion of the ancient Novgorod department in its composition.

Since March 12, 2013, the St. Petersburg Diocese has been limited by the administrative borders of St. Petersburg . However, since the ruling bishop of the diocese is simultaneously the head of the newly formed St. Petersburg Metropolis, his dignity and title are preserved. It is interesting that the second city, which is included in the title of Metropolitan ( Novaya Ladoga ), appeared on the territory of the newly allocated diocese of the Metropolitanate - Tikhvin .
