Story
Second World War . The crew of the American plane ends up in a German camp . Three crew members decide to sacrifice their lives to allow the rest of the prisoners to escape. The protagonist of the film, the fourth crew member (He) , wants to join them, but the commander and fellow soldiers refuse him, because only three are needed to carry out his plan, and the fourth person will arouse the Nazis' suspicion and make the escape plan impossible. Saying goodbye to friends leaving for death, the protagonist says:
- In truth, Dick (that’s the name of the commander of the flying fortress ) , I will be ashamed to live.
“And you live so that you are not ashamed.”
Pilots die, but many prisoners, including the main character, escape from the camp.
Fifteen years pass, and the former prisoner becomes a well-known successful American journalist . Before traveling to Europe for a NATO session , the hero learns about the criminal plans of American air reconnaissance - in fact, we are talking about the inevitably impending military conflict between the USSR and the USA . The hero of the film faces a dilemma: to make a statement by disclosing the details of a planned provocation known to him, having lost all his life benefits, or to remain silent.
On the eve of his departure from the United States, the hero visits his ex-wife, who spends the night remembering her life (including: betrayal of ideals that had to be fought during World War II and the war in Spain ; betrayal of her friends, members of the post-war American Communist Party ) and makes difficult choice for yourself.
