Conroe is a city in the United States located in eastern Texas , the administrative center of Montgomery County . It is part of the Greater Houston Metro Area . According to the 2010 census, the number of residents was 56 207 people, according to the US Census Bureau in 2015, 68 602 people lived in the city [1] .

Content
History
The city was named after the cavalryman of the Union and the woodworker from Houston, Isaac Conro, who founded a sawmill on the site of the future city in 1881 [2] . Initially, wood and oil were the main sources of income in the city. The new city was called Conros Switch, the great demand for pine growing in the region provided a large influx of residents [2] .
During the 1930s, due to oil revenues, the city briefly became the leader in the number of millionaires per capita. On August 24, 1955, Elvis Presley performed at the High School Stadium. After the construction of the I-45 motorway was completed, Houston residents began to move to the city [2] .
At the beginning of the XXI century, the city authorities provided financial incentives to construction companies, and as a result, the city began to be actively built up with new houses, provoking even greater growth [3] .
In 2012, the United States Census Bureau identified the area around Conro and The Woodlands as the “large urbanized transit area”, a region with more than 200,000 inhabitants. This definition allowed the region to receive federal funds for the development of transport [4] .
Geography
Conro is located in the northeast of the county, with coordinates: [5] .
According to the US Census Bureau , the area of the city is 137.7 square kilometers, of which approximately 136.5 is occupied by land, and 1.2 is water [6] .

According to the Köppen climate classification , a humid subtropical climate prevails in Conro [7] .

According to the 2010 census, 56 207 people lived in the city, there were 20 017 households and 13 086 families. The racial makeup of the city: 69.7% are white , 10.3% are African Americans , 1.2% are Native Americans, 1.8% are Asians , 0.0% (23 people) are residents of Hawaii or Oceania, 13, 7% are other races, 3.2% are two or more races. The number of Hispanic residents of any race was 38.5% [10] .
Out of 20 017 households, 33.1% include children under 18 years of age. 45% of households were couples living together (21.2% with children under 18 years of age), in 14.5% of households women lived without husbands, in 5.8% of households men lived without wives, 34.6% of households were not by families. Only one person lived in 27.9% of households, 8.9% were single elderly people (over 65). The average household size was 2.42. The average family size is 3.05 people [10] .
The population of the city by age range was as follows: 29.4% are residents under 20 years old, 33% are between the ages of 20 and 39, 26.6% are between 40 and 64, and 10.9% are 65 and older. The average age is 31.5 years [10] .
According to surveys of five years from 2010 to 2014, the average household income in Conro is $ 46,109 per year, and the average family income is $ 53,856. The per capita income for the city is $ 23,362. About 16.6% of families and 20.4% of the population are below the poverty line. Including 28.6% of those under the age of 18 years and 9.4% of those aged 65 and over [11] .
Local government
The city is managed by the mayor and the city council of five members, one of which is the deputy mayor. In addition to the city council and the mayor, residents of Conro elect a judge of the municipal court. The remaining key positions are appointed, including [12] :

Infrastructure and transport
Interstate I-45 passes through the city, as well as the Texas Highway 75, 105, and the 336 State Ring Road.
In 2015, an internal bus service was launched in the city, for which Conroe Connection is responsible [13] .
The city has a regional airport Conro and North Houston. The airport has two runways 2286 and 1524 meters long [14] . The closest commercial passenger airports are Houston Intercontinental George W. Bush and William Hobby Airport in Houston .
Education
The main part of the city is served by the Conro independent school district, a small part in the north of the city is served by the Willis independent school district. There are four private Christian schools in the city: Sacred Heart Catholic School, Covenant Christian School, Lifestyle Christian School and Montgomery Christian Academy.
Residents of the city can get higher education in the departments of Lone Star College: Lone Star College-Montgomery and the University Center LSC.
The city has a branch of the Montgomery County Library.
Economics
According to the city’s financial report for 2015, the city’s revenues in 2015 amounted to $ 77.4 million, expenses - $ 99.1 million, the city owned assets of $ 88.8 million, including $ 73.4 million in investments, liabilities amounted to $ 14.9 million. Recreation and Entertainment
In the northeast of the city and beyond it is the Conro dam , which is the site of many cultural and recreational activities all year round [2] .
There are several parks in Conro. The largest of these is Candy Kane Park, which houses the Montgomery County Museum of History [15] [16]
