The scene of the game is the Soviet Union during the Cold War . The main character is Naked Snake , later known as Big Boss , an operative in the FOX squad who was tasked with freeing the Soviet scientist and destroying the experimental superweapon [11] . Unlike previous games, where the main scene was mainly buildings and structures, the action of Snake Eater takes place in the forest [12] . Although the setting has changed, the key element of the game is still imperceptible penetration into enemy territory, and the heroes again directly address the player [11] . The story of the game Snake Eater is narrated through in-game scenes and radio conversations [13] .

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater has been well received by both players and critics alike. Sales totaled about 3.96 million copies worldwide [14] . On gaming sites Game Rankings and Metacritic, the game was rated at 91% [15] [16] . Browsers praised the game for its interesting gameplay, sophisticated characters, plot and in-game video. The review system, called IGN and GameSpy reviewers obsolete, and the complex management of the protagonist were criticized.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Snake Eater is similar to the previous Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 games. The player-controlled snake must sneak through the enemy territory. The hero has at his disposal an impressive arsenal of weapons (from a pistol to a grenade launcher), but the main emphasis in the game is on secrecy and avoiding collisions with the enemy. In the process of completing the mission, Snake finds many useful items, including motion sensors [17] and a “proprietary” cardboard box, which serves as a shelter for Snake [11] .

Despite the similarities, Snake Eater has many game aspects not seen in previous games. These include military camouflage, a new melee system called “close-quarters combat” (briefly “CQC”), limited stamina and a wound healing system [11] [18] .

The player spends about two-thirds of the playing time in the rainforest [19] , where the key to successfully avoiding collisions with opponents is the skillful use of the surrounding vegetation (for example, a player can climb a tree or hide from an enemy soldier in dense grass). Also, special emphasis is placed on the use of camouflage [11] . The radar used in previous games was replaced by a simple motion sensor and speaker system, which correspond to the time period of the game.

Snake uses his camouflage to go unnoticed. In the upper right corner is the value of invisibility

The percentage in the corner of the screen reflects how much Snake is visible to enemies. Values range from low (full visibility and attracting attention) to 100% (complete invisibility to the enemy) [20] . To increase the stealth indicator, the player must periodically change his camouflage uniform and war paint to merge with the environment; for example, a player can put on a uniform of dark color while leaning against a tree, or apply striped face painting while in thick grass [18] . Other camouflage items are also available, among which a crocodile mask stands out, allowing you to go unnoticed in water.

In the game Snake Eater, in addition to the lane, there is an indicator of injuries sustained by Snake [18] . For example, when jumping from a great height, the hero can damage his leg, as a result of which his movement slows down. Injury is treated with a medical tire and bandage . If such injuries cannot be cured, Snake will not be able to completely restore his health for some time [18] .

To survive, the hero will have to rely on the local flora and fauna [18] . Snake's stamina over time is invariably depleted [13] , and therefore he must eat. If this is not done, unpleasant consequences will occur, for example, Snake will not be able to aim correctly when shooting, or he will begin to rumble in his stomach, which can be heard by the enemy [18] . Animals and birds act as food. The food obtained from them can be stored in a backpack. In this case, the hero may get spoiled food, the use of which will lead to abdominal pain and a sharp decrease in endurance [11] .

The CQC system ( Close Quarter Combat ) is a slightly complicated combat system from the previous parts. The main melee tricks of Snake again become a series of three shots and throws. In addition, an enemy soldier can be captured and then used as a “human shield” or, if necessary, interrogated [17] [18] .

Snake vs. Monkey

There is an additional mode in Snake Eater - this is a mini-game where the player will have to catch monkeys while controlling Snake [11] [17] [21] . For this, tranquilizers and blinding grenades are used. The action takes place in locations from the main game. For completing the mini-game, the player receives bonuses in the form of a monkey mask and Banana camouflage [17] .

Story

Characters

The main character of the game is Neykid Snake , who is known as Big Boss in subsequent games (voiced by Akio Otsuka in the Japanese version and David Hayter in the English version), the former green beret and CIA operative . During the mission, Major Zero (voiced by Banjo Gingoy in the Japanese version of the game, and in the English by Jim Piddock) supports Snake with tips and tricks, a former member of the British special forces . Para-Medic (voiced by Hoko Kuwashima and Heather Holly), a medical specialist, and Sijint (voiced by Keiji Fujiwara and James Mathis), an arms expert, also support the hero regarding flora and fauna, as well as equipment and weapons.

The two main antagonists in the game are GRU Colonel Evgeny Volgin (voiced by Kenji Utsumi and Neil Ross), who wants to overthrow the CPSU Central Committee General Secretary Nikita Khrushchev [22] , and Boss (voiced by Kikuko Inoue and Lori Alan), a former mentor of Snake [18] . The Cobra unit, which is headed by the Boss, includes:

  • End ( Eng. The End ), a skilled sniper, considered the "father of modern sniper shooting" [23] . The appearance of the character was awarded 15th place in the list of “Top 100 gaming moments” according to the IGN resource [24] .
  • The Fear , with superhuman flexibility and dexterity.
  • The Fury , a former astronaut armed with a flamethrower and a jetpack [18] .
  • Payne ( The Pain ), who controls the hornets used to defend and attack the enemy [18] .
  • Sorrow ( eng. The Sorrow ), the soul of a deceased medium [25] .

Other characters include:

  • Nikolai Sokolov (voiced by Naoki Tatsuta and Brian Cummings), Soviet nuclear scientist. His release is the goal of Snake.
  • Eve (voiced by Misa Watanabe and Suzetta Blowjob), a KGB agent sent to help Snake, who later falls in love with her.
  • Ocelot (voiced by Takumi Yamazaki and Josh Keaton), commander of the GRU elite squad Ocelot [26] , Volgin's subordinate.

The plot also contains humorous references to early games. For example, Major Raikov’s appearance is a parody of the criticized effeminate appearance of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Ryden, the protagonist of the game, and among the prison guards is the grandfather of the inept soldier Johnny Sasaki from previous games [27] .

History

The game takes place in August 1964. The scandal surrounding the construction of the giant Shagokhod tank by the Soviet Union, capable of firing nuclear missiles from any location, besides the United States, several other powers were drawn. The task of the protagonist, codenamed Naked Snake, is to restore the balance of power and prevent the escalation of the conflict, which threatens to escalate into World War III. The main character goes to the territory of Tselinojarsk, where the Soviet scientist Sokolov is kept.

Mission Virtue

CIA agent Naked Snake sent to the forests of Tselinojarsk in the USSR [18] . Major Zero, Para-Medic, and Snake's former mentor, Boss, support Snake on the radio. [28] His task is to free the nuclear scientist Sokolov, who is secretly engaged in the development of the advanced nuclear tank Shagokhod [18] [28] . Snake successfully copes with the task, but the Boss betrays him and goes to the side of Colonel Volgin, taking with him two nuclear warheads of the Davy Crockett type [29] . Sokolov is captured by members of the Cobra squad, Snake gets a serious wound in a fight with the Boss, and Volgin with his units leaves. To conceal the abduction of the scientist, the colonel activates one of the nuclear warheads [30] . In response to Ocelot’s warnings, he says that, if necessary, the Boss will blame the incident [31] .

Operation Snake Eater

The Soviet side detects a U.S. military plane that flew to evacuate Snake, and the Soviet Union officially declares that it is the United States that is responsible for the nuclear attack. Two nations are on the brink of nuclear war. In secret negotiations between Lyndon Johnson and Nikita Khrushchev, an agreement is concluded on the US attempt to prove its innocence and restore peace [32] . The states agree to stop the treacherous group of Volgin, destroy the stolen "Shaghodok" and eliminate the Boss who betrayed the American side [33] .

A week after completing the previous mission, Snake was again sent to Soviet territory as part of Operation Snake Eater [33] , where he would fulfill the US promises to the Soviet side. During this mission, he receives support from a former NSA agent, Eva, who had fled to the Soviet Union several years earlier (although Snake was told that Adam would help him) [34] . After numerous clashes with the Ocelot detachment and the destruction of almost all members of the Cobra detachment, Snake successfully discovers the whereabouts of Sokolov and the abducted Shaghodok, but he is captured and placed in the Volgin’s Grozny Grad military fortress. Having witnessed how Volgin beat Sokolov to death, Snake saves Eve from Ocelot's bullet, but loses his eye. In the end, Snake manages to escape.

Returning to the building to destroy the Shagohod, Snake discovers the Philosophers group. Created by the most influential people from the USA, USSR and China, this organization secretly kept the whole world under control [35] . However, after the end of World War II, members of the organization began to fight against each other, and the organization broke up. The organization’s cash (“Heritage”), jointly accumulated to finance wars (about $ 100 billion), was divided and hidden in banks around the world [36] . Volgin illegally appropriated this money [37] , and the US government, as it becomes known to Snake, is going to return it.

Snake continues the mission and destroys the fortress and the Shagokhod, and then collides with Volgin. The colonel dies from a lightning strike, and Snake and Eve go to the lake, where the ekranoplan is hidden. But before they manage to escape on it, Snake enters the battle with the Boss, which he must kill according to the mission [33] . After a tense battle, Snake overcomes his feelings and kills her. Together with Eve, Snake flees to Alaska , they spend the night together. Then Eve disappears, leaving a tape recording admitting that she is a Chinese spy sent to steal the “Legacy of the Philosophers” for China [38] . Eva also reports that, in fact, the Boss did not go over to the side of the Soviet Union — she was ordered to pretend to be a deserter in order to infiltrate Volgin’s entourage and find out about the whereabouts of the “Heritage” that America was going to get [39] . Fulfilling her mission, she had to sacrifice her good name, pretending to be a traitor to the end, and die at the hands of Snake in order to prove US involvement in the nuclear attack launched by Volgin [40] . According to Eva, no one will know the truth about this operation. The boss will go down in history as a traitor and a monster trying to unleash a nuclear war [41] .

After completing all the explanations, Snake arrives at the White House, where he receives the title “Big Boss” and is awarded the Cross “For Outstanding Merits” in the presence of an enthusiastic crowd. Snake, demoralized and shocked by Eve's story, takes his medal and immediately leaves the ceremony, giving everyone present a contemptuous look [42] . He later visits the nameless grave where Boss lies at Arlington National Cemetery . He puts the Boss machine gun and a bouquet of lilies on this grave, then salutes. Big Boss drops one single tear.

After the final credits, the voice of Ocelot is heard talking to the CIA leader on the phone. Ocelot reports that Eva's stolen microfilm was fake, and that half of the Philosopher's Legacy is now in the hands of the Americans. It turns out that Ocelot was a triple agent from the very beginning. He says that he is the same Adam working for the CIA [43] .

Development

Hideo Kojima - creator of the game series Metal Gear

Initially, it was assumed that the game will be developed for the PlayStation 3 console, however, due to the early release of a new set-top box, the PlayStation 2 was chosen as the target platform [44] . From the very beginning, project manager Hideo Kojima wanted to fundamentally change the setting from previous games [45] . He noted that the creation of the jungle setting was not only wanted by the developers, but also fans of the Metal Gear series [45] . At the same time, he acknowledged that the jungle environment — weather, landscape, and living creatures — was difficult to create [45] . Since in the previous parts the player started the game near the enemy base (and sometimes already in it), Kojima this time decided to make Snake Eater more realistic by determining the start of the mission a few miles from civilization, so that Snake had to independently find the way to the enemy camp [45] .

Kojima said that it was very difficult for developers to create an environment [46] . He explained that the reason for the action of the previous games in the series was unfolding on the premises was the insufficient power of the existing consoles, which could not reliably reproduce the environment of the forest [47] , because unlike buildings, there are no flat surfaces in the jungle. The protagonist of Snake Eater must overcome obstacles on rocks, mud mounds and trees. As a result, the engine from previous games for this game did not fit, and a new one was developed [47] . One of the difficulties in the development was the adjustment of motion capture technology, which allows one to create the accuracy of movement on uneven surfaces [46] .

Many fans wanted the support of a 3D camera in the game Snake Eater [48] , but the game was finally created without it. Kojima, who saw Metal Gear Solid , Sons of Liberty, and Snake Eater as one trilogy, wanted the camera to remain the same in the third part as in the first two games [48] . However, he nevertheless admitted that in many modern computer games a 3D camera is supported [48] . The mode was implemented in an improved version of the game called Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence [49] , as well as in all subsequent games of the series [48] .

For Snake Eater Kojima, boss fights were developed that were fundamentally different from those that had occurred in previous games. Kojima said that in the battle with the sniper End, the gameplay will be free and open [50] . This battle takes place in the thick jungle, and the player will have to work hard to find a sniper attacking from long distances and from an unknown position. The battle can drag on for several hours [50] , in other battles the enemies are always visible to the main character. However, the player has two ways to avoid the fight with End: either by killing him in advance, or during the battle, save and close the game, set the console time one month ahead, re-enter the game and find that End has died of old age [51] . Kojima commented that there is no similar feature in other games [50] .

Release History

As with Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty , Snake Eater was first released in North America; The Japanese release took place a month later [8] [52] . For the Japanese version of the game, camouflage options were available that were not included in the American version [53] . A limited premium edition of the game was released in Japan at the same time as the regular version. It was supplied with a special DVD-ROM, two booklets and a model of the Shagokhod [54] . Those who pre-ordered the game were supplied with it a CD with songs from the game, screensaver and additional camouflage options. Also, users who pre-ordered the game were given access to the site with the ability to download images and music [55] .

Konami included several additional details in the European version of the game: European Extreme difficulty level, a theater for watching game videos, Duel Mode, where players could replay boss fights, as well as additional face colors in the form of European flags and two new levels for Snake vs. Monkey [56] .

Subsistence

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence is a reissue of Metal Gear Solid 3. This version was released in Japan on December 22, 2005, and later released in North America (March 14, 2006) [12] , in Europe (October 6, 2006) and in Australia (October 13, 2006) [57] . In the reissue, the camera became free [58] , new camouflages appeared, as well as funny videos about Ryden. Bonuses are placed on 2 separate discs, so the game came out on three DVDs. Also, the game was supplemented with multiplayer mode. There are also old games in the series, such as Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake [49] [59] .

The component of the multiplayer game mode, called Metal Gear Online , includes five game modes, each of which can involve up to eight players [60] . Each player controls a simple soldier and fights with opponents in Deathmatch or Capture the Flag mode. Locations, objects, ways of movement and combat units (KGB, GRU soldiers and members of the Ocelot squad) are borrowed from the main game [59] . Depending on the server settings, the player with the most points will be able to play for one of the main characters (or Reiko Hinomoto from the game Rumble Roses ), which will give him unique abilities and / or equipment. For example, if a player from the GRU team scores the most points in one round, then in the next round he can play for GRU leader Major Raikov [61] . Konami's Japanese online service that supported this mode was closed on December 26, 2006 [62] , in North America a similar service was closed on April 2, 2007, and in Europe on October 30, 2007. Metal Gear Online [63] .

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D

На выставке Electronic Entertainment Expo , прошедшей в 2010 году, компания Konami показала демонстрационный ролик под названием Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater — The Naked Sample .

HD Collection

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker [81] [82] .

Music

GameSpy website columnist Benjamin Turner praised the game, calling it "probably the best game in the entire Metal Gear series to date." At the same time, the need to constantly switch the view from the third person to the view from the first was criticized [9] . On Eurogamer, the game was called "consistently the best game compared to MGS2: Sons of Liberty " [17] . The observer said that thanks to the directorial talent of Kojima, an impressive and memorable adventure filled with vivid characters was created. Compared to previous Metal Gear Solid games, the gameplay looks completely new and can be quite varied. By analogy with GameSpot , a similarity between the characters of the game and the heroes of the James Bond films was noted. The reviewer called the “unsuccessful" game mechanics a drawback [17] .

The Russian magazine " Country of Games " put Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 10 points [108] and called it the best game of 2005 [109] . The reviewer of the magazine Vitaliy Aleksashin highlighted the stylization, which creates a “unique viscous atmosphere” [110] . In the review of the site Old-Games.RU , the strengths were designated video inserts created on the game engine and scoring, not inferior to the visual series. In conclusion, it was noted that “MGS3 is one of the most beautiful games on PS2” [111] .

Criticism diverged regarding the camouflage system in the game. Edge Magazine suggested that “thanks to such a system, one can easily go unnoticed by opponents even by approaching them too close” [107] , while GameSpy criticized the system, saying that “this is just a number on the screen that nobody not interesting ” [9] . Among a number of new features, GameSpot called camouflage “the most important and beautifully implemented” [11] . The game was criticized for the low frame rate of 30 frames per second (in Sons of Liberty, this value was 60 frames per second) [9] .

Game videos in Snake Eater were described by Edge Magazine as “interesting, memorable, and beautifully shot.” [107] At the same time, the script of the game and the voice acting of Snake by David Hayter were criticized in it; according to the conclusion of the magazine, the actor’s speech “does not even reach the standards of other games, not to mention the movie” [107] . GameSpot noted that the humor in the game “suffered from translation from the Japanese language and can be liked only by loyal fans of the game” [11] .

About Subsistence

The Subsistence version has earned significantly more endorsements than the original Snake Eater ; the score on Metacritic was 94% [112] . Observers noted that the use of a 3D camera in the game “eliminated the only and main problem” [113] and gave the gameplay “more freedom and realism” [49] . The multiplayer mode was recognized as “impressive for a PS2 game”, although at the same time it was noted that “the distinguishing features of the MGS3 setting are not entirely suitable for online games” [113] . In December 2006, Subsistence received the Best Online Game Award from IGN [114] . Sales of this edition of the game amounted to about 1,000,000 copies worldwide.

IGN columnist Jeff Haines praised the inclusion of the Demo Theater mode in the game, thanks to which the player can not only view cut scenes from the game, but also change Snake’s costume with each new view. They also favorably noted the new disguise options. The reviewer concluded that even players who did not succeed in the original Snake Eater would not be mistaken in choosing Subsistence . The score of the game was 9.8 / 10 [59] .

In a review of the "Country of Games" it was said that due to the large number of bonuses and additions, Subsistence could well be considered an independent game. The observer praised the introduction of a free camera into the game, making it easier to view and making boss fights “more entertaining and entertaining.” The network mode of the game and errors in Russian-language phrases, which in Subsistence were never corrected, were criticized [115] .

About Snake Eater 3D

The score of the game Snake Eater 3D on Metacritic was 78%, a total of 46 reviews were made [116] . Based on 32 reviews, on the Game Rankings website, the game received a total score of 78.37% [117] . Critic Richard George of IGN noted that the ported version of the original game is not without flaws due to the technical limitations of the portable console. According to the observer, the camera, despite being completely manageable, still interferes with the game process. Despite the comments, the reviewer considered this version a “wonderful” console game worthy of attention. The score was 8.5 / 10 [80] .

On the GameSpot website , the game was rated at 8.0 / 10. Peter Brown said that Snake Eater 3D accurately recreates the original and, in addition, contains many improvements. The advantages included convenient control, the presence of a 3D camera and cinematography; the disadvantages are recurring problems with frame rate, as well as the predominance of in-game scenes in the first half of the game [118] .

Rewards

Since its release in 2004, the game has received many awards. Among the most notable are “Best Action Game”, “Best Screenplay”, “Best Sound for PS2” given by IGN , as well as “Best Game of 2004”, “Best Story”, “Best Sound Effects” from Gamespot .

At a game developers conference in August 2005, the game’s theme music was awarded the “Best Original Vocal Song - Pop” award from Game Audio Network Guild . In the same year, the game received the prize "Best PS2 Game" [18] . David Hayter was nominated for an Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Award for "Outstanding Achievement in Character Sounding" [119] .
