History
The Beginning (1979-1998)
Ar-Rayyan first appeared in the championship in 1979 when the president of the Qatar Basketball Federation (FBK) Nasser Al-Mubarak Al-Ali established the national championship. In that year, the team had to play in another city, because of the coating of the home stadium with cement, which caused the danger of playing on it. At that time, in Qatar, in addition to Ar-Rayyan, there were 4 basketball clubs competing with him in the championship [1] .
A report published by the BFK in 1982 said that the total number of basketball players in Ar-Rayyan in 1970 was 8, and in 1974 the number of players was reduced to three. The club was then coached by Sudanese coach Abdul Monem Salem. In the 1980s, after the championship was established, the number of basketball players increased, and in those years the best young players were selected by South Korean coach Yon-Sook. The stars of the club of those years were former players of the youth team Ahmed Mohammed Ali and Omar Mohammed. In the season 1985-86. after dropping out of the championship, the team was completely updated and composed by players of youth teams of those years. In 1992, the club numbered more than 95 basketball players [1] .
The Golden Era (1998-present)
In 1998, a team led by Ali Fahro won his championship. Sheikh Saud bin Khaled At-Thani, then president of the club, awarded each player a total of 2,000 riyals . After that, the team continued to show good results during the new millennium, winning the Qatar Championship 15 times, winning the FIBA Asia Champions Cup in 2002 and 2005, and becoming second in 2001, 2003, 2008 and 2010, and took third place in 2004. 2006, 2007 and 2011. The club is one of the titled clubs of this tournament.
In these years, they also had regional success, winning the Gulf Club Championship in 2002 and 2004, in addition becoming three times second: in 2003, 2006 and 2011.
