Biography
Romanian by birth, Ion Rymaru was born in 1946 in Caracal, grew up with two brothers, was the eldest of them. Father Rymaru daily beat his wife in front of the children; in the end, the couple nevertheless parted, and dad moved to Bucharest , where he got a job as a driver in a tram park.
Ion’s growing up in the meantime continued to be rather hectic - in high school he fell into a scandalous situation of seducing his teacher’s minor daughter, and later was even convicted of aggravated theft.
Having entered the faculty of veterinary medicine with a rather low score, Rymaru began to study somehow, more than once remaining in his second year, and completely showing no zeal for acquiring knowledge. The teachers did not speak too flattering about him, calling the student Rymar uninitiated, illiterate, tongue-tied and not burdened with intelligence and a wide range of interests of a person. Classmates and dormitory neighbors tried to keep clear of Jon because of his strange behavior and some noticeable instability. A little later, his psyche and nervous system were declared unhealthy. In addition, it was obvious that Rymaru did not control his libido, showing an increased interest in the love affairs of other students.
Kill Series
In 1970, Bucharest flinched at a series of terrible crimes. The victims of the unknown maniac were women, late returning home. The criminal started up everything - from a hammer to a steel bar and a knife, as happened with a waitress who was returning late after a shift in a restaurant. He went out on his hunt after midnight, especially in inclement weather - Rymaru willingly “worked” in the rain, fog or storm. Soon the women of Bucharest completely stopped going out alone after 9 o’clock in the evening. At the same time, the police did not respond to the appearance of the maniac for a long time, dismissing the fact that all the “rumors” about the maniac were greatly exaggerated. However, soon the authorities still had to ascertain the existence of a problem, and the problem was big. By that time, the number of victims of Rymar was four, and at least a dozen more crimes were fatal - fortunately, the criminal did not manage to kill all his victims. Rymaru acted completely insane - he robbed, beaten, raped, mocked, and even - for which he received his terrible nickname - drank blood and bit his victims.
Arrest, trial and execution
On the streets of the city, patrols were organized, reinforced in the evening and at night - 6,000 people, about 100 cars and 40 motorcycles. Night workers of all establishments were mobilized - bartenders, hotel security; a huge number of people were arrested on suspicion and even more were interrogated.
Rymar was arrested immediately after another crime - he returned to the hostel, carrying a bag with an ax and a knife. The police officers who were waiting for him noticed blood stains and signs of a struggle on the suspect - bites and scratches.
Rymar was charged with 16 serious crimes. He was silent during interrogations. He didn’t confess, he didn’t unlock, he only seemed to pull away from reality and behaved completely dispassionately. Only a trick helped make him “split” - a dressed up policeman was put in the cell to the criminal, and he managed to “talk” to Rymar. It was later revealed that Ion, the “hereditary” maniac, his father, three decades later, was found guilty of four murders that occurred in Bucharest in the 1940s. At the same time, the killings of those years and the killings of Jonah were very similar in circumstances. His father died, having fallen out of the train, at the age of 53 years, and found him guilty after death, by fingerprints. It happened a year after the execution of his son.
Ion Rymaru received a death sentence. He tried to appeal it, but was refused. It is noteworthy that the courtroom literally exploded with applause when the verdict was read out to the Bucharest maniac.
On October 23, 1971, Ion Rymaru was taken to carry out the sentence in the Zhilava prison. It is known that he behaved insanely - he refused to go himself and offered all kinds of resistance, and therefore he had to be dragged to the place of execution by force. Despite the fierce protests of the criminal, the sentence was carried out through execution in the courtyard of the prison.
