Content
Club career
He began his career as a player at the Clackton Town Football Club from the seaside town of Clecton-on-Sea in Essex. In 1901 he moved to Tottenham Hotspur , where he scored 63 goals in 132 matches. In 1909 he moved to London Chelsea, which included 116 matches and scored 34 goals [1] . He was the team's top scorer in the season 1912-1913 with 10 goals scored [2] . At the beginning of World War I, he was drafted into the British Army, as a result of which he practically did not participate in the England Championship in 1914-1915 , although he received short-term leave to replace the injured Bob Thomson in the final of the FA Cup in Chelsea, but due to the recovery of Thomson from injury did not participate in the final. He was injured during the hostilities and could not continue his career as a football player.
Team Career
He made his debut for the English national team in 1903 , in a match with the national team of Ireland , which ended in victory for the British with a score of 4: 0. In total, from 1903 to 1911 he played 23 matches for the national team, in which he scored 29 goals, setting a national record that held until the early 1950s. He also participated in three unofficial matches against the South African Union team in 1910 , scoring 4 goals. Also from 1906 to 1914 he played 44 matches for the amateur football team of England , scoring 57 goals.
Olympic career
He was the captain of the British Olympic football team at the Olympics of 1908 and 1912 , twice becoming the Olympic champion .
Army Career
He served in the 17th battalion of the Middlesex Regiment on the western front , was wounded in 1916 . He rose to the rank of captain .
