+ (pronounced "plus") is the debut studio album of British author and singer Ed Sheeran released by Atlantic Records and Asylum Records on September 9, 2011. The album is a commercial breakthrough of Sheeran, who previously released 5 independent EPs . Jake Gosling produced most of the album with American hip-hop producer No ID

The interest of the media surrounding “ +” was greatly fueled by his previous singles “ The A Team” and “ You Need Me, I Don't Need You ”, which took 3 and 4 positions in the UK Singles Chart, respectively. “Lego House” was released on November 11, 2011 as the third single of the album and adopted the success of the chart of its predecessor, who ranked 5th in the United Kingdom. Three subsequent singles - “ Drunk ”, “ Small Bump ”, and “ Give Me Love ” - were released a year later and entered the top 25 UK Singles Chart.

Most music critics greeted the album with positive reviews. Since the release, + has been leading the UK Albums Chart since its first week of sales, exceeding 102,000 copies. The album performed well on the American Billboard 200 , taking 5th position and selling 42,000 copies. The album was the most successful debut for the first studio album by a British artist in the United States since Susan Boyle 's I Dreamed a Dream album in 2009. + is Britain's sixth best-selling album of the decade.

Music

The + is the result of the influence of the hip hop duo Nizlopi and the popular Irish singer Damien Rice , who inspired Sheeran to write the album. Throughout the recording, Sheeran uses a small acoustic guitar and sings akapelno. The Daily Telegraph noted that the lyricism of the songs is based on the things that Sheeran cherishes in life, speaking in a "soft manner and with a flexible voice" in the style of hip-hop.

Critical Reaction

Commercial Success

In the United Kingdom, mid-week sales reports showed that + hit the top of the UK album charts , although Digital Spy said he was still facing competition from Laura Marling's A Creature I Don't Know album. [1] + debuted at the UK Albums Chart on September 18, 2011, and 102,000 were sold in the first week. [2] After the album hit the charts, Sheeran on Twitter thanked his fans and posted a link to download the free EP . [3] The mini-album included three tracks: “Fire Alarms”, “She” and a remix of the single “You Need Me, I Do not Need You”. [3] By the end of 2011, the album was certified as Triple Platinum, indicating sales of over 900,000 copies. [4] As of June 2015, the album was sold in the UK in the amount of 1,958,000 copies, making it the sixth best-seller of 2010 and the best-selling album of the 21st century. + He has been in the UK Albums Chart for more than 200 weeks, which makes him one of the longest-lived albums in the history of the British charts. In Ireland, the album was included in the top 10 continuously from 2011 to 2017. [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] In Australia, the album debuted on October 31, 2011 at number 41 on the ARIA album chart, reaching first place on August 13, 2012. [13] The album was certified by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) as Triple Platinum. By January 2013, the album had spent 65 consecutive weeks on the ARIA album chart and was still on Top 5. [14] In New Zealand, the album debuted at number 34 and topped the charts after 54 weeks. [15] In the United States, + debuted at number five on the Billboard 200, having sold 42,000 units in its first week. [16] As of March 2017, 1.21 million copies were sold in the USA +. [17]
