Cleveland was born in Loughborough, studied at Cambridge University . As a convinced royalist, during the years of the Civil War he remained loyal to King Charles I. In 1655, he was captured by the revolutionaries and imprisoned in Yarmouth , but then released by Cromwell .
In addition to the caustic satyrs, who gave him great fame during his lifetime, Cleveland wrote love poems, marked by undoubted poetic talent, although not free from exaggeration, sometimes reaching ridiculous. A collection of Cleveland’s poems, with notes, a biographical, historical and literary essay, was published in 1903, edited by Berdan.
