The flag of Switzerland is a red square cloth with a white straight cross in the center, the ends of the crosses of which do not reach the edges of the cloth. The crosses are equal in size, and at the same time, the length of each cross is 1/6 longer than its width. The flag was officially approved as the state symbol of Switzerland in 1889. (the coat of arms was approved at the same time).

Flag History
According to one version, the flag comes from the coat of arms of the canton of Schwyz (one of the three cantons that formed the Swiss Confederation in 1291 , together with Uri and Unterwalden ). For the first time, a banner of this kind was used at the Battle of Laupen in 1339 . Then the crosses of the cross were narrower and reached the edges of the flag , reminiscent of the modern Danish flag .
If the colors of the banner remained unchanged from the time of the Holy Roman Empire , then the shape of the banners changed over the course of several centuries:
- the triangular banner of the confederation in the XV and XVI centuries ;
- white cross, consisting of 5 identical squares, on a red background in the 19th century ;
- starting from 1889 (modern form) 5 squares turn into a cross whose crosses are the same and 1/6 longer than their width;
- the flag color was officially approved on January 1, 2007 , and corresponds to the 485th textile pantone number.
Red Cross
The Red Cross symbol used by the International Committee of the Red Cross comes from the Swiss flag. A red cross on a white background was declared the official symbol of protection by the Geneva Convention of 1864 . Such flag colors (which are only a mirror substitute for the colors of the Swiss flag) were adopted in order to note the special merits of the Swiss citizen, the founder of the ICRC, Henri Dunant [1] .
