Biography

Piesendel was born in Kadolzburg, near Nuremberg , where his father, Simon Piesendel, was a cantor and organist who came from a Marken-Kirchen dyer family. From the age of nine, he sang in the choir of the Ansbach Palace Chapel, where the leader was the virtuoso singer , and the famous violinist Giuseppe Torelli was the accompanist . There is an opinion that Pisendel studied violin playing with Torelli. When the boy’s voice began to break, he began to play the violin in the court orchestra. In 1709 he left Dresden to continue his musical education.

On the way to Leipzig in Weimar, met with Bach , and in Leipzig was introduced to Telemann . Piesendel became an active participant in the student Collegium musicum , founded by Telemann, with whom they soon became friends. In 1711, after a concert in Darmstadt, Piesendel was offered a place in the court orchestra, but he refused. The following year he received a position in the Saxon State Chapel, where he worked until the end of his life. He accompanied his sovereign in tours of Europe , in Venice he met with Vivaldi , whose works he performed earlier.

Around 1718, Pisendel began to study composition under the direction of Hainichen , and in 1728 became the accompanist of the court orchestra.

Pizendel’s students were Franz Benda and . He was friends with Zelenka , whose work he published after the death of the composer.

He left few works, but all of them are of high quality. All preserved works are written for instruments: 10 violin concerts, 4 concerts for orchestra , 2 sonatas for violin and 8 symphonies and trios. Despite the small number of works, Pisendel had a great influence. Vivaldi, Telemann and Albinoni dedicated their violin concerts.
