Jane Morris became a model for the image of Beatrice [2] . After the death of his wife, Elizabeth Siddal, also portrayed by Rossetti in the image of Beatrice, the artist associated his feelings for Jane Morris, who was married, with the story of Dante and Beatrice, conveying a personal perception of the plot in his last large-scale painting [1] . The plot of the picture is taken from Dante Alighieri 's poem " New Life ", where Dante first meets Beatrice [2] . Lines from the poem - the original and translation of the authorship of Rossetti himself - are carved on the frame of the picture [1] . Unlike the painting of the same name in 1859, Rossetti deviates from the canonical interpretation of this plot - earlier Beatrice during this meeting with Dante was accompanied by two ladies who are not in the picture of 1880, Dante himself and the personified image of love are depicted in the form of small figures in the background, such Thus, all the viewer's attention is focused on Beatrice [2] . Against the background of the picture are depicted Siena and Florentine architectural structures taken by Rossetti from photographs sent by his friend Charles Fairfax Murray [2] .

The painting became one of Rossetti's last works; it was discovered in the artist’s workshop after his death. The painting was on an easel, but it was framed, however, sometimes the literature says that it was not finished [2] [3] . Henry Marillier notes that the picture shows "all the defects of his [Rossetti] late style, manifested due to soreness, poor vision and dying of strength", and that another person worked on the background [3] .

In 1883, the painting was acquired by philanthropist and patron Rossetti Frederick Leyland , and he also owned a smaller copy of Beatrice's Greetings, created in the same years [3] .
