Biography
In 1955 he graduated from the philological faculty of Baku State University , and in 1958 graduate school of the same university. In 1965, received a second higher education at the Azerbaijan State Institute of Languages.
In 1958-1990 He taught at the Faculty of Philology of Baku State University, passing a career from to the dean. In 1965-1966 he was sent to Egypt to lecture on the Azerbaijani language and literature at Cairo Ain Shams University.
In 1990—2011. - Director of the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan; simultaneously in 2001-2011. - Academician-Secretary of the Department of Humanitarian and Social Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
Since 2011 - Advisor to the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
In 1958 he defended his PhD, and in 1964 - his doctoral dissertation in philology, in 1967 he was awarded the academic title of professor. In 2001, he was elected a corresponding member, and in 2007 - a full member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
For more than twenty years he was the chief editor of the international journal Turkology.
The main studies were devoted to the topics of Turkology and Azerbaijani philology: scientific works on the system of phonemes of the Azerbaijani language, the solution of urgent problems of grammar, theoretical linguistics, historical phonetics, etymology, history of language, dialectology, stylistics and speech culture were prepared.
He authored more than 500 scientific papers, over 30 publications, monographs and textbooks. Under his scientific supervision, about 40 doctors of philosophy and doctors of science have been trained.

He was awarded the Order of Shohrat (2000).
Laureate of the State Prize of the Azerbaijan SSR for the monograph "Phonetics of the Azerbaijani language."
