Life
Nothing is known about his early years, information about the events of his maturity is very fragmentary. Around 1544, Clement-not-Pope worked in the cathedral of Bruges . Soon after, he had a business relationship with Tilman Susato , a publisher in Antwerp . From 1545 to 1549 he probably served as bandmaster in the chapel of Charles V. In 1550, he was hired by the Brotherhood of Mary at Hertogenbosch . Among other cities where he could live and work, Ipern and Leiden could be mentioned .
Jacob Clement was nicknamed “non-Pope” to distinguish him from his contemporary Pope Clement VII or from the poet Clemens Jacobus Pope (who lived in Ipern at the same time as Jacob Clement).
Music
Clement-not-Papa is the representative of a generation of the Dutch school between Josquin Depre and Orlando di Lasso . He composed:
- 15 mass; all except the funeral (Missa defunctorum) are made in the technique of parodies (published in Leuven in 1555 - 1580 by Pierre Falez );
- about 233 motets (including in the collections of Cantiones sacrae , "spiritual songs");
- 80 French and Flemish songs;
- 159 Souterliedekens (lit. "songs on the psalms", processing the metric Protestant Psalms; published in Antwerp in 1556 - 1557 by Tilman Suzato ).
The most famous are Souterliedekens. Folded without frills, they were suitable for singing at home. As a thematic basis, they used famous secular melodies (including table and love songs, ballads and other popular songs of that time). Mostly three-part plays. The chant of the text is syllabic .
The influence of Clement-non-Pope was especially strong in Germany. Orlando di Lasso knew his music and used elements of his style.
The complete works of Clement-not-Pope were prepared and published by Karel Burnet-Campers .
