Surazh (Poland) ( Polish. Suraż , Belorussian. Horad Suraž , vil. Suraž, Suraž ) is a city in Poland , part of the Podlaskie Voivodeship , Białystok County . It has the status of urban-rural commune. It covers an area of 33.86 km². The population is 983 people (as of 2004 ).

History
Known since the beginning of the XIII century as an old Russian city. It was destroyed by the Mongols in 1241, renewed and strengthened by the grandson of the Lithuanian prince Mindovg. In 1507, Sigismund I gave Surazh for life use to Elena Ivanovna , the widow of Prince Alexander . In 1808 it became a contiguous city of Bialystok County. According to the 1897 census, 1,599 people lived in the city, including Poles - 1,154, Jews - 368, Russians - 75 [1] . The city had 3 Orthodox churches, 2 Catholic and Jewish prayer schools. The contingent city of the Grodno province, Bialystok district [2] .
