Brief Feature

The band was founded by the British singer and conductor Paul Hilier in the USA in 1990 as a vocal ensemble for performing music of the XX century. The first concert took place in 1992. Initially, the ensemble included (besides Hiljer) only US citizens, but after Hiljer moved to Copenhagen in 2004, the composition expanded and became international. In addition, it included a group of instrumental musicians (denoted as the TOV Band ).

Theater of Voices was originally conceived for the performance of music of the XX century. Collaborated with S. Reich (world premiere of “Proverb” in 1995), J. Adams (world premiere of “El Niño” in 2000), A. Pyart (several CD albums, a number of works - premieres in audio recordings), D. Lang ( world premiere of The Little Match Girl Passion [1] in 2007), C. Stockhausen (version Stimmung, 2008).

Along with modern music, the Theater of Voices performs music (mainly chamber) of virtually any historical period, including the Middle Ages ( Goket album, 1997-98, etc.), Renaissance ( Lasso church music, 1996, etc.), Baroque (album “Scandinavian cantatas” by D. Buxtehude , 2010), film music (“Arrival” by Johan Johansson ).

The team has toured extensively in Europe and the United States (since 2003, has repeatedly performed at Carnegie Hall ), has participated in many international music festivals, including Edinburgh , Berlin (2008), BBC Proms (2008).

Pulitzer Prize (2008). Grammy Award (2009).
