He was mostly self-taught, studied for a short time in Paris with Alexander Shoron . Upon returning to Cologne, he conducted amateur concerts at the local cathedral. Then, however, Klein was noticed and supported by Anton Thibault , whose musicological ideas significantly influenced Klein. Thanks to the support of Thibaut, Klein was able to go to Berlin, where he studied under Karl Friedrich Zelter , then taught singing at the university. During a one-year stay in Italy, Klein studied early choral music (in particular, the heritage of Palestrina ), then translating its material in his choral works (in which, however, contemporaries also noted the influence of Handel ).
Klein has a number of oratorios on biblical themes - “Job” ( German: Hiob ; 1822 ), “Ievfay” ( German: Jephtha ; 1828 ) and others, the operas “Dido” (to the verses of Ludwig Relstab , 1823 ) and “Ariadne” ( 1824 ), many hymns, romances and songs.
Among the Berlin students of Klein were, in particular, Karl Friedrich Weizmann , Karl Bank , Wilhelm Hartkes .
Klein's daughter Elizabeth married Egyptologist Carl Richard Lepsius .
