On October 31, 1996, it was announced that the new stadium would replace Waverly Park and would be the headquarters of the Australian Football League (AFL) [4] . In 2025, the AFL will become the full owner of the stadium [5] .

Docklands, like Waverley, was built primarily for Australian football , unlike most stadiums in Australia of the same size as cricket .

The first match took place in the first round of the AFL season 2000 between the “ Essendon ” and “ Port Adelaide ” [6] . The match was attended by 43,012 spectators, and the game ended in a home win.

On August 16, 2000, a one-day international match was held.

Docklands was the first stadium in Australia to have moving seats . All 4 levels of a single stadium tier can be moved up to 18 meters ahead into a rectangular configuration. For the first time they were used on the game " Melbourne Storm " in July 2001. Although the seats are a key feature of a stadium, they are rarely used due to damage to the sod.

In 2006, he was the home ground of Australia vs New Zealand in the series of the Three Nations tournament. At the 2006 World Cup took the Australian match against the British .

In 2015, LED advertising was added around the perimeter of the stadium at levels 1 and 2.

October 24, 2015 at the stadium passed the Australian stage Speedway Grand Prix (length 346 meters (378 yards )). This was the second time since Sydney in 2002, when Australia held the Grand Prix stage. The winner was 45-year-old American Greg Hancock , who was also the winner in Sydney in 2002. The second was the Dane Nils-Christian Iversen , and the third was the Pole Maciej Janowski .
