Bunker, Emily

Emily Bancker ( Eng. Emily Bancker ; 1861/62 - June 5, 1897) - a popular actress of the XIX century, performing in theaters of North America in the 1880s and 90s. Her origin is really unknown: was she an American or was originally from the UK [1] .

Career

In 1882, she, along with Gus Williams, was played in the comedy production of One of the Finest [2] , and two years later she played in the production of Le Pave de Paris [3] [4] . She later joined the Sol Smith Russell Company , for which she played the role of Sybil in the production of Pa . In 1888, Bunker appeared in the production of Hanlon Brothers' production Voyage en Suisse , where she met her future husband, actor Thomas W. Riley. She was a member of the Rosina Vokes' company, which began its activities at the Daly's Theater on April 13, 1891. During this time, Emily appeared in such productions as A Game of Cards, Wig and Gown and The Rough Diamond [4] . May 1 of the same year, 1891 played the role of Lucy Grandi in the production of The Silver Shield . A year later, Emily joins the troupe of Charles Frohman and played the role of one of two widows (the other widow was played by Jordian Drew in ) in a comedy production of Mr. Wilkinson's Widows [5] [6] . After that, she played roles in such performances as The Junior Partner , His Wedding Day and Gloriana .

Bunker's last performance was in New York on April 3, 1897, when she participated in the production of Our Flat , at the Murray Hill Theater [5] . Throughout the 1890s, Emily's popularity reached great success thanks to the role of Mrs. Musgrove in the farce comedy Our Flat , staged in theaters in London and New York in 1889 [7] [8] .

Death

During a stay in Albany, New York, Emily fell ill and was taken to a local hospital, where she died on June 5, 1897 after an unsuccessful operation. The cause of the actress's death was reported to be complications caused by peritonitis . Her husband, a businessman at the time of the death of the actress was next to her bed. Later Thomas Wee. Riley has made a long career as a manager for Broadway productions. Before his illness, Barker toured New York, playing in the production of Victorien Sardou A Divorce Cure [9] . Obituaries disagreed about the origin of the actress; some wrote that she was born in New York, others that she moved to America from the UK. Nevertheless, most publications agreed that at the time of death the actress was thirty years old [10] [11] .
