History
The status of the city was received on February 27, 1253 .
At the beginning of World War II , about 3,500 Jews lived in Bochnia, which amounted to about 20% of the total population [1] . During the German occupation of Poland, Bochnia was the site of a Jewish ghetto in which Jews from neighboring areas were forcibly evicted by the Nazis . The entire Jewish community was killed during the Holocaust , with the exception of 200 bonded laborers working in a factory led by Gerhard Kurzbach, a Wehrmacht soldier who ordered them to work overtime and thereby saved them from deportation [2] . An estimated 15,000 Jews were deported from Bochnia, and at least 1,800 more were killed in and around the city. [1] About 90 Jews from Bochnia survived the war while hiding in camps or in the Soviet Union. Most of them immigrated to the USA, Brazil, Belgium and Israel.
Attractions
Bochnia is one of the most picturesque cities in Poland. The salt mine in Bochnia is the pearl of the tourist region and at the same time the oldest enterprise in Poland, whose roots go back to the 1st half of the 13th century . Since 1995, some of the unique workings have been used for medical purposes. An underground tourist route 2.5 km long, laid at a depth of 290 m, leads to the world of salt corridors with preserved traces of operational work and unique salt sculptures.
