Description

The tower bears a strong resemblance to , a structure in German Cuxhaven , built in 1853 for to sailors.

The pyramidal water tank rests on three reinforced concrete piles that are inclined to each other and converge at the top point of the structure. Just under the center of the tower begins a spiral staircase that goes vertically upwards [1] [2] .

History

In early 1951, the administration of the town of decided to build a water tower. The person responsible for this assignment, Preben Vistesen, accidentally met at the airport with the aspiring architect Jörn Utzon , with whom he was waiting for a flight from Copenhagen to Aalborg . Upon learning of the plans of the mayor of Svaneke, Emil Anderson, Utzon offered his services and immediately drew a sketch of the future structure on a napkin. A little later, Vistesen presented this napkin to the mayor, who was fascinated by the project. Almost all members of the city administration spoke out against such an unusual structure, but the mayor managed to convince the endorse the Utzon project. Official approval took place in April 1951, construction began shortly after, and the tower was commissioned in November 1952. The water tower performed its direct functions until 1988, after which it was deemed unnecessary. In 1990, she was listed on the .
