History

The first mentions - from 1414. In 1434, the Duke of Mazovia Boleslaw IV gave Chelmno town rights to the village. In 1514, Princess Anna gave the right to shed four fairs a year, and a weekly market that accelerated the development of the city. In 1526, Sigismund I was included in the province of Mazovia .

In the second half of the sixteenth century, the population of Ostrow exceeded 3,000 people, at that time an impressive number of inhabitants.

In the seventeenth century, many wars put an end to the further development of the city. The first Jewish settlers appeared.

The inhabitants of Ostrow took a very active part in the national struggle - the Kosciuszko uprising , the January uprising .

The First World War brought no damage to the city.

World War II was a huge blow to the city and its people. Many residents, mostly Jews, were subjected to mass executions, forced relocation to the ghettos in Warsaw and Lomza , and then to the Treblinka death camp . In 1941, in the neighboring Gronda pl: Grądy (powiat grodziski) and Komorowo pl: Komorowo (powiat ostrowski), the Germans organized camps for Soviet prisoners of war.

In the district, a detachment of the Home Army “Opocznik” operated, numbering in August 1943 almost 2000 people. One of his most significant actions was the successful attack on the district headman Reinhard Ekert, carried out in the city center. The occupation has reduced the population of the city by 60% of approximately 10,000 inhabitants.

In the post-war period, the destroyed city was restored, industrial enterprises were built there. The nineties were a period of dynamic change and economic development.
