Biography

His family was originally from Asia Minor Ayvalik and moved to Lesbos before the Asia Minor catastrophe of 1922, the care of his grandfather, who took care of their departure to get ahead of the events immediately after he returned wounded from the front. Ioannis himself was born in Lampa Milus in the family of Grigorios and Katerina Sikisov, who have been living there since the day of their wedding. In his family there were still older brother Stratos and a younger sister Panayota [1] .

There he lived his childhood years, went to elementary school until the age of 11.5 years, when his school closed and students were forced to walk to Keramia on foot. After graduating from elementary school and passing exams, he entered the gymnasium of the island's capital, Mytilini [1] .

The financial situation of the family was difficult. His father resigned from the post of village constable when he was asked to inform someone, but his conscience did not allow him to do this. From that moment, the family began raising sheep. Since the elder brother was already in the last classes of the gymnasium-lyceum, the family did not have financial opportunities to continue studying Ioannis. It was decided that Yannis would remain in the village with the herd, but the decision was canceled when Metropolitan Jacob (Cleomvrotu) of Methilena, who, making sure that the child wants to become a priest, intervened, promised him that he would send him to one of the church schools. According to him: “This was the first time I left my village. I didn’t even get to Mytilini when I was little, only to the neighboring villages and to Ayasos, where we went on holidays to visit relatives ” [1] .

Ioannis Sikis entered the Rizaris Church School in Athens and was elected its directorate for a scholarship. The school was then seven years old: three years of a gymnasium, three years of a lyceum and theological lessons in the seventh year. The routine was “army”: the school was a boarding school, students left it once a month, on Sunday after service, until 7 pm, provided that they were picked up and returned by their specific patrons [1] .

After the first three years, the rest of the family was forced to move to Athens, as financial problems became even more complicated. Ionnis was forced to interrupt his studies at the school, and worked as an assistant at a textile factory in New Ionia, a suburb of Athens, founded by refugees from Asia Minor [1] .

But under pressure from Metropolitan Mitilinsky and his teachers the next year, passing exams, he entered the Lyceum, but left the school regularly because he continued to work. Despite the fact that the early years in Athens were difficult, he recalls the years in the gymnasium and lyceum as the best years of his life [1] .

Together with some students, he took part in student unrest , initiated by students of the Athens Polytechnic University , demanding the resignation of “ Black Colonels ” [1] .

After graduating from college, he entered the theological faculty of the University of Athens . After exams, he and his group of comrades visited Jerusalem. And now he was obliged to work again in parallel, helping his brother, who was studying in America as a pilot [1] .

He took part in strikes and established contacts with people of anarchist orientation with whom he visited Athos, reassuring the monks that they should not be afraid of these people with earrings [1] .

Since the 2000s, he actively participated in the process of overcoming mistrust between the Turkish authorities and the Greek population of Turkey after the Asia Minor catastrophe [2] .

On August 29, 2016, the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople was elected to be ordained bishop of Erithra [3] .

September 25, 2016 in the Temple of St. Vukol in Izmir, Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople with the host of bishops was ordained bishop of Erithra [4] . Iso was the first consecration in this temple after 1922 [5] .

In May 2019, he was appointed interim manager of the Prussian Metropolis , and on June 8 he was intronized as hegumen (rector) of the Holy Trinity Monastery on Heybeliada.
