Taxonomy

The species was first scientifically described in 1971 as Raja leucosticta [4] . The holotype is a male 59.4 cm long, caught not far from Pointe-Noire ( ) at a depth of 200-300 m [5] . The species epithet comes from the word dr. λευκό - “white” and other Greek στικτός - "spotted" .

Habitat and habitat

These demersal ramps live off the west coast of Africa , in the waters of Benin , Cameroon , Cote d'Ivoire , Equatorial Guinea , Gabon , Ghana , Guinea , Guinea-Bissau , Liberia , Mauritania , Nigeria , Senegal , Sierra Leone and Togo . They are found on the continental shelf and in the upper part of the continental slope at a depth of 70-600 m [2] at a temperature of 9.04-16.31 ° C [6] .

Description

The wide and flat pectoral fins of these rays form a rhombic disk with rounded edges and a slightly protruding snout tip. On the ventral side of the disc are 5 gill slits, nostrils and mouth. On the thin tail there are lateral folds. These skates have 2 reduced dorsal fins and a reduced caudal fin [1] .

Maximum recorded length 80 cm.

Biology

These stingrays lay eggs enclosed in a hard horn capsule with outgrowths at the ends. Embryos feed exclusively on yolk [3] .

Human Interaction

These skates are not subject to targeted fishing. Caught in by- catch [3] . The data for the assessment of the conservation status of the species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature are insufficient [2] .
