Stefan Henze ( German: Stefan Henze , May 3, 1981 ; Halle , East Germany - August 15, 2016 , Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ) is a German slalom canoeist . He has participated in kayaking and canoeing competitions since the mid-1990s. Tragically died during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil as a result of injuries sustained in an accident .

He was the silver medalist of the Olympic Games ( 2004 ), the world champion (2003), the four-time silver medalist of the world championship (2003, 2006, 2006, 2009), the bronze medalist of the world championship (2005).
Sporting Achievements
He won a silver medal in the discipline S-2 (canoe-two, men) at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens with Marcus Becker .
Winner of six medals at the World Canoe Slalom Championships organized by the International Canoe Federation, including a gold medal (discipline K-2: 2003), four silver medals (S-2: 2006, S-2 team: 2003, 2006, 2009) and bronze medal (K-2: 2005).
He also won gold and two silver in the C-2 discipline in the team event at the 2008 European Championships in Krakow .
His father, Jürgen Hentze, is the 1975 world champion in the S-2 discipline, and his older half brother, Frank Hentze, a participant in canoe slalom competitions, a multiple winner of the world championships (two silver medals and one bronze), won six medals at the European Championships - including three gold ones. At the Summer Olympics in London (2012), he was also part of the German national team, but did not qualify for the quarterfinals.
On August 12, 2016, he received serious head injuries in an accident in Rio de Janeiro , where he worked as a coach during the 2016 Summer Olympics . He was taken to a hospital, but after some time they decided to transfer him to another hospital, located 20 kilometers from the city. Due to insufficiently operative actions of physicians, Stefan Hentze was unable to recover and died three days later [3] [4] .
After the death of the athlete, his organs - the heart, liver and both kidneys were transplanted to seriously ill people in the hospital of Rio de Janeiro [5] [6] .
