Story

1978 year . At night, IRA fighters Chris ( Cillian Murphy ) and Frank (Michael Smiley), businesswoman Justine ( Brie Larson ) and a couple of Frank's assistants, Bernie ( Enzo Cilenti ) and Steve ( Sam Riley ) meet on the outskirts of Boston. A mediator Ord ( Army Hammer ) comes out of the building to them, he takes them inside the abandoned workshop. At the meeting, arms sellers Vernon ( Charlto Copley ) and Martin (Bebu Kissei) appear. It turns out that Vernon brought the wrong rifles, it almost leads to conflict, but Chris tests one of them and agrees to buy, transferring the money.

Vernon calls his people, Harry and Gordon, who bring weapons to the car. In the process of unloading, it turns out that Harry beat Steve the day before, and he does not want to show himself to him. Frank orders the ship, Harry recognizes Steve and starts hitting him. The groups collide, then Steve is forced to apologize, but suddenly goes on to abuse. While everyone is arguing, Harry takes the gun and wounds Steve. Members of both groups begin to shoot, Martin falls because of a wound to the head and a suitcase with money lies next to him. Harry shoots Bernie in the back and he dies.

Vernon is wounded in the shoulder and then in the leg. Harry hurts Justine in the leg, and she responds with his. Suddenly, snipers start shooting at everyone. Chris and Ward take both. It turns out that the Horde is familiar with one of them, Howie ( Patrick Bergin ), who says he was hired to kill everyone. He tries to tell who the employer is, but at that moment he is killed. Chris suggests that Verne let go of Justine. Again they start to shoot, Gordon ( Noa Taylor ) is crawling behind Justine. A disconnected telephone bell rings, Chris sends Frank to call and call for help, Vernon crawls behind him.

Justine kills Gordon, who ran out of ammo, Vernon kills Frank. Martin wakes up and starts shooting at everyone, not remembering what he is doing there. He sees Howie and Jimmy dead (it turns out that he hired them), takes the case with the money, but dies suddenly. Chris rises to the office and kills Vernon, then calls for help. Harry moves in with Steve's car, and he, already dying, kills him with a shot through the bottom of the car and the driver's seat. Survivors Ord and Chris are sent to the exit with the money, but Justine shoots them (she was with Martin at the same time). Ben Wheatley Interview for the Daily Herald

Ben whitley

In October 2014, director Ben Wheatley assembled the cast to make a film based on the script, which he wrote with Amy Jump [4] [14] . Utlee spoke about the characters in his film not as heroes of an action movie suffering from clinical accuracy, his characters are people and each has its own life [4] . He noted that it was easier to edit this film than to edit the drama, since not to cut the words out of the dialogue in the drama, and the shooting scenes easily replace each other [4] . Actors often tried to improvise, sometimes it was possible, and when it was not possible the director demanded to follow the script [13] . According to Hammer, Wheatley has a Darwinian approach to the material, the strongest survives [13] . The film was produced and financed by the British television channel Film4 Productions [15] .

Recruitment

“In the film, a lot of violence, but in life it causes tears, and here - laughter [13] ."

- Army Hammer , Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Charlto Copley

Charlto Copley was invited to play Vern, a gangster of narcissus in a polyester suit, prone to arrogance, speaking of himself as a rare pearl, but unable to use a weapon even to save his own life, reminiscent of a child of genius, but everything he thinks about himself has no relation to reality [16] . The brightness of Copley's character allowed him to shine in every scene, even alongside such actors as Larson and Hummer [16] . Copley tried to make his voice so annoying and everybody wanted to be shot if only he shut up [16] [17] . In April 2015, Brie Larson joined the cast, replacing Olivia Wilde , who left the project due to the filming schedule [18] . Larson was a fan of the work of Jump and Wheatley, she liked the script she read, thanks to two things, what was in the foreground and in the second, deeper [14] . Kilian Murphy was invited to play the role of Chris, who could not be called a positive hero or handsome [9] . Hammer played a pimp, neat handsome, resembling fix. There was some relaxation in his behavior, it was as if he didn’t give a damn about everything that was happening, as if he had already seen it [13] .

Shooting

Brighton

The main shooting took place in the home of Wheatley in the city of Brighton [11] . The shooting took place in one hangar. [9] The whole picture was shot in chronological order [9] . Computer effects were used in the picture [14] .

Wheatley mounted the montage on the set, and at the end of the day you could see the footage. The director paid much attention to detail. In the picture was used the mass of pyrotechnics, including 4000 zirconium bullets and two explosive devices [13] . Filming was completed July 17, 2015 [20] .

Rental

The premiere of the film took place at the Toronto festival, then it was shown at the London festival on October 16, 2016 [21] . In the UK, the film was released March 31, 2017 [22] .
