History

1918 - 1991

The museum was created in May 1918 by the works of Dmitry Panasovich Bochkov . The main exhibits of the exposition of that time are the materials of the 35th Oryol and 36th Bryansk regiments, which were stationed in Cherkassy, ​​and then were disbanded in connection with the dissolution of the old Russian army, their military banners, weapons, gold and silver items. In addition, paintings, tapestries, carpets, various valuables that were requisitioned in the surrounding manor houses, household items, and tools were transferred to the museum funds. There were historical and archaeological (with an art gallery), ethnographic sections.

As of October 1, 1926, there were 14,229 exhibits, among which a marble vase of Greek production of the third century. BC e. depicting the head of Bacchus , a copper stupa of German work of 1676, a casket of 1735, a collection of the Old Believer school of icon painting of the 16th – 19th centuries. The book fund of the museum library amounted to 13 thousand volumes, of which 10 thousand were foreign publications.

In the 1920s, the memorial room of T. Shevchenko was created in the museum.

In the early 1940s, there were 20,800 exhibits in museum collections; three sections were formed: nature with subsections of zoology, geology, mineralogy; stories with subsections of archeology, history, art and the room of T. Shevchenko; section of socialist construction.

During the German occupation of Cherkasy, the Nazis inflicted heavy losses on the museum in the amount of 698,134 rubles (according to the act of the state commission of April 12, 1944). Over 200 units of rare weapons, paintings and more were exported to Germany. In total, during the war years, 4 thousand exhibits were lost.

On May 1, 1944, the museum received its first visitors. December 14, 1944 opened a new section of the exhibition "Cherkasy in World War II."

On July 21, 1954, in connection with the formation of the region, the Cherkasy Interdistrict Museum of Local Lore was reorganized by the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR No. 1054 into the Cherkasy Regional Museum of Local Lore.

In 1984, the museum’s funds totaled more than 75 thousand exhibits; four departments functioned in the museum building in Cherkassy (the department of nature, the department of the history of the pre-Soviet period, the department of the history of Soviet society and the department of fine art). In addition, the literary and memorial museum of I. S. Nechuya-Levitsky in the Steble Korsun-Shevchenkovsky district, the literary and memorial museum of I. L. Le in the Settlement , the museum of the history of the five hundred movement in the village of Staroselye, Gorodishchensky district, functioned as separate structural divisions of the museum [ 1] .

On May 8, 1985, the opening of the new premises of the regional museum of local lore took place. The exposition is located in 25 rooms with a total area of ​​2800 m².

After 1991

In the 1990s, due to inadequate funding, the situation of the museum was complicated [2] .

In 2002, the museum was included in the list of museums, the funds and exhibits of which are state property of Ukraine and are included in the state museum fund of the country [3] .

Since 2002 [4] the museum has been included in the list of institutions and organizations of Ukraine that have received the right to carry out a state examination of cultural property [5] .

In 2010-2011 the facade of the museum was repaired at the expense of the regional budget of Cherkasy region, the technical base of the institution was replenished with six television screens and an audio system [6] .

In 2013, museum workers began work on creating a collection of towel towels (by the end of July 2016, the size of the collection exceeded 1300 pieces) [7] [8] .
