About composition

The second side of the single “ Money ” with the recording of the song “Any Color You Like”

“Any Color You Like” is the only song in Pink Floyd's work, co-created by three band members without Roger Waters . This was the last track recorded by the British band without authorship or co-authorship of Roger Waters until his departure from Pink Floyd in 1984, and the last track co-authored by Nick Mason right up to the release of The Endless River . Andy Mabbett, editor of magazine and author of several Pink Floyd books, called Any Color You Like "an instrumental composition composed of a synthesizer and a guitar." According to his statement, its name is borrowed from an advertisement for the world's first Ford-made mass-produced automobile of the “ T ” model, which offered a choice of a car “of any color if that color is black” [5] .

In the concept of The Dark Side of the Moon , according to Roger Waters, “Any Color You Like” expresses a lack of choice, a suggestion of a choice where there is none.

According to Nick Mason, “Any Color You Like” in the dynamics of The Dark Side of the Moon album pauses before the song “ Brain Damage ” - “gives some respite in the dense sound of the record” [7] .

The working title of the composition during concert performances in 1972 and during studio work was “Scat” or “Scat Section” [8] .

Concert Performance

“Any Color You Like” was performed at Pink Floyd concerts in the 1970s only as part of The Dark Side of the Moon Suite, including in 1972 in the form of a jam called “Scat Section” almost a year before the official publication album (by 1975 before the festival in Nebworth , this suite was performed by the group 385 times) [9] . In 1975, lengthy versions of “Any Color You Like,” sometimes up to 15 minutes, were often performed at concerts.

“Any Color You Like” with a slightly altered sound along with the rest of The Dark Side of the Moon was performed by Pink Floyd after almost 20 years during the 1994 tour of .

“Any Color You Like” is one of the two Pink Floyd tracks from The Dark Side of the Moon along with “ Speak to Me ”, which were never performed during recitals by David Gilmore and Roger Waters [5] . Only during the Roger Waters 2006–2008 tour , Any Color You Like] was included in the concert program as part of The Dark Side of the Moon Suite.
