Biography
Born in Baranovka , Zhytomyr Region , in 1958. He graduated from Baranovsky Secondary School No. 1. During his school years he was fond of athletics, the first mentor was Dmitry Ivanovich Prisyazhnyuk. He studied with Valery Lebedyuk, Vladimir Sus, who also achieved significant success in sports. In 1978 he became a member of the junior team. In 1979, at the European Championship, which took place in Germany , he won fifth place. In 1980, he took second place in the USSR Championship, won in competitions in memory of the Znamensky brothers and was enrolled in the USSR national team. He took part in the Olympics-80 , which was held in Moscow . In the same year he became the champion of the USSR, the year before he won the USSR Cup. He took part in a friendly meeting with US athletes and won, conquering a height of 2 m 33 cm, which at that time was his personal best and one of the best results in the world. He was a member of the alternative games " Friendship-84 ."
Alexei Demyanjuk introduced innovative approaches to the training system, which were recognized by the leading athletes of that time. He was the first in the world to come up with a model of specialized jumping shoes, which over time, global manufacturing companies have introduced into their production [1] .
Demyaniuk was married to Tatyana Markevich, also a high jumper, she is currently the director of the Lviv travel company. The couple had two sons: the eldest Dmitry and the youngest Maxim.
Death and memory
He died in 1999: he was found dead in a room for detainees at the border outpost No. 7 in the city of Chop in Transcarpathia . He rode the Moscow- Prague train to comrade Alexander Bezkrovny in Slovakia , wanted to stay there to work. On April 4, border guards detained Aleksey Demyaniuk at Chop station - they checked his passport. After 13 hours, he died. The athlete found a bottle of vodka, and the drug morphine in the blood. In the death certificate they wrote: strangulation with vomit due to intoxication. According to his wife, Demyanjuk never abused alcohol. The guilty party was recognized as a soldier who took up duty on the morning. They buried Alexei on the eve of the Easter holidays on April 9, 1999 [2] .
In memory of him, friends founded the tournament "Memorial of Alexei Demyaniuk", which takes place in Lviv . The tournament annually attracts 100-150 participants from different regions of Ukraine and Belarus and 400-500 spectators.
