Background

After the death of Emir Abd al-Rahman II in 852, the population of Toledo rebelled, as has happened more than once. The uprising was caused by both the corrupt administration of the Muslim administration and the desire to return to the rule of Christian kingdoms in the north. Citizens were also often harassed by Mosarabs who lived in the Muslim borderlands. Thus, the inhabitants of Toledo grew up with weapons in their hands, seeking the help of Asturias and the Basques, according to Ibn Khaldun , quoting the Spanish-language annals of the 10th century:

The inhabitants of Toledo asked for the help of the King of Galicia and the King of the Basques, who came to free them with the help of people in the city. The Toledo army was formed by uniting the people of Toledo and Christian kings. The emir, at the head of a small army, went to the bank of the Guadalaset River. He retreated to the lands to the south, and then ambushed Toledo's army, as the bulk of the Arab army anticipated the maneuvers of the townspeople. This led to the massacre of more than 8,000 people, which brought victory to the Muslims and led to the suppression of the uprising in Toledo [1] .

Battle

The organized forces of Muhammad I easily defeated the urban mob and their Christian allies from Asturias and Navarre. However, they were not able to take control of the entire city for another seven years.

Consequences

After both the Asturians and the Navarra were defeated in Guadalaset, Muhammad I was not able to capture the city. The riot, which was inspired by the Christian clergy and muvalladas , lasted until 858 in connection with the continued desire of citizens to independence from Cordoba. In the end, Emir Muhammad I conquered the city in 858 and imprisoned Bishop Eugene, who was executed the following year [2] .
