The Volán Period
The founder of the group was bass player Ernё Kish (Kiss Ernő). He was a big fan of the legendary Hungarian rock band “ Gemini ”, who performed at the VOLÁN youth club, and its leader Gabor Varzegi (Várszegi Gábor) and, inspired by his example, in 1970 tried to create his own rock band in this club, which called "Volán" ("Wheel"). The composition of his group was not constant: drums were often played by Bardóczi Gyula, drummer of Gemini, keyboard player was Imre Papp of Nivram, also a future member of Gemini, and the guitarist was Adam Vegari at one time (Végvári Ádám), future member of Universal . In 1971, Byla Nagy (Nagy Béla), a former Apostol member, keyboardist Istvan Lerch (Lerch István) of the Hétfő band (Monday), the future spouse of the popular Hungarian singer Katy Kovacs , and guitarist Laslo Baranski (Baranszky) became the drummer. László), who a year later also transferred to Gemini. In those years, their team tried to imitate the Western rock bands Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, which were at the peak of their popularity in the early 70's.
In 1972, Katy Nagalin, who played the saxophone and keyboards, also sang, and their guitarist for a year was Heilig Gábor joined their team from the Tűzkerék group. A change in the composition of the group entailed a change in style, which became softer. At the end of 1973, Kati Nagy left the girl group Vadmacskák, which was created by former members of Beatrice. And the band "Volán" was renamed to "Kerek Perec" ("Salty Pretzel") and in 1974 performed as follows: Ernё Kish (Kiss Ernő) - bass, Bila Nagy (Nagy Béla) - drums, Attila Fabian (Fábián Attila) - guitar, flute, from the Metronom group and Ferenc Časar (Császár Ferenc) - keyboards, vocals, also from the Metronom group. Then, in the spring of 1975, Katie returned, and as she became the main vocalist and face of the group, the group became known as "Kati és a Kerec Perec" ("Katie and the Salty Pretzel"). In November 1975, Attila and Ferenc left the band and were replaced by guitarist Laszlo Stákai (Sztankay László), former Wanderers member and future Atlantis member and Szabó Balázs (vocals, guitar, keyboards, former member) "Gemini". [2]
Main Period
In 1976, the group recorded the song “Langolok”, which was a cover of the hit “I'm On Fire” (1975) of the British disco group “5000 Volts”, and then a fun dance song “Pereces bácsi”. The group was shown on television in Saturday’s musical television program Egymillió fontos hangjegy. This attracted the attention of Peter Erdős Péter, head of the record label Pepita, who was selecting candidates for government support at the time. By that time, the line-up changed again, and the group acted on television in the following form: Kiss Ernő - bass, Katy Nagy - vocals, saxophone, keyboards, Patay Miklós - guitar, from Metronom, Vincze Tomás - drums and Gabor Lengyel (Lengyel Gábor) - guitar, violin, from the P. Mobil band. Also sometimes, Kegye János, a flute, a future member of the folk rock band Corvina, joined the band.
In 1977, Zámori Sándor of the Beatrice band became the new drummer of the band. Kati És A Kerek Perec participated in the Hungarian teleconference “ Metronóm ” with the song “Egy dal neked” (“Song for you”), which was released as a single, and also represented Hungary at the international competition “ Intervision ” in Sopot (Poland ) with the compositions “Egy dal neked” and “Hinta” (“Swing”) and took 14th place, bypassing the second representative of Hungary - singer Kati Kovacs in terms of total points. [3] The authors of both compositions were Katy Nagy and Rezhe Soltés (Soltész Rezső), the founder of the rock band “Corvina”. The composition “Egy dal neked” was No. 1 in the weekly Ifjúsági Slágerlistá of 11/18/1977 and No. 20 in the annual Slágerlistá'77 TOP20. The main Hungarian music review Pop-Meccs called the group "surprise of the year." [4] In the same year, “Kerek Perec” recorded together with the famous pop singer Mátrai Zsuzsa the Hungarian cover of “Táncolni jó” of the disco composition “I love to love” (1976) by British singer Tina Charles (ex- "5000 Volts ").
In 1978, Gabor and Sandor went to the Korong band, and drummer Gyula Bardotsi and guitarist Adam Veggari returned to Katie and the Salty Pretzel. The song “Hinta” was released on the single “Hinta” / “Jókedvű Nap” (“Swing” / “Fun Day”), and the song “Jókedvű Nap” became a hit in 1978 in Hungary (No. 10 in the annual Slágerlistá'78 TOP20) and later entered the compilation "PEPITA FAVORIT'79". The next single of the band “Csillagszórós Éjszaka” / “Egy Kölcsön Álom” (“Stars at Night” / “Dream for Rent”) was also very successful (No. 4 in Slágerlistá'78), the first of the compositions was a romantic ballad, written in the spirit American rock band " Eagles ". Another of their hits “Eladom a bánatom” (“I bought my grief”) gained phenomenal popularity in the countries of Eastern Europe and the USSR and in fact became the hallmark of the group. In the Soviet Union, the collective was known under the name “KKP Band”, its recordings were published on flexible records appendices to the magazine “Horizon”.
In 1979, by the decision of Peter Erdös, the Pepita label recorded an album of covers “DISCO PARTY”, which included the disco hits of Western stars interwoven by Hungarian artists: “ ABBA ”, “ Boney'M ”, “ Eruption ”, Gilla , “ Bee Gees ” , " La Bionda " and Donna Summer . Katie Nagy performed on this collection the Abbot hit “Fernando”. In the same year, Kati És A Kerek Perec released their debut giant disc, which contained the very powerful compositions Csak Egy Képregény (Romance in Pictures), Ő Az A Cigánylány (She's a Gypsy), “ Tizenöt Nyár ”(“ The Fifteenth Year ”),“ Villamos Szerelem ”(“ Trams in Love ”),“ Szeress, Amíg Élsz! ”(“ Love While Alive! ”), Which finally conquered Eastern Europe and were repeatedly reprinted in various collections . “Titanic” was recognized by Pop-Meccs as the best song of 1979 and was included in the “DISCO PARTY 2” compilation. In the Hungarian charts for the whole year Slágerlistá'79, the song «Az A Cigánylány was No. 4, Titanic No. 13 and Villamos Szerelem No. 20. In addition to the studio work, Kati and Salty Pretzel made a joint tour with rock the band " Edda Művek ". However, in the eyes of Peter Erdös, the group by that time had become something of a “fallback option”, since he had already made the main bet on his other wards - the group “ Neoton Familia ”, which in the same 1979 received the Grand Prix at the MIDEM festival in Cannes [5]
In 1980, the Neoton Família had problems with the drummer, and they began to invite Gyula Bardotsi to play at their concerts. Soon, Peter Erdös invited Gyula to go completely to the Neoton Família, but he agreed to this on condition that his friend Adam Veggari would go along with him. Their places on Kati És A Kerek Perec were taken by drummer Vinci Babarik (Vince) and guitarist Sandor Mikulcza (Mikulcza Sándor) from the team " Syconor ". In the new line-up in 1981, the group recorded their second long play “Szerpentin”, which turned out to be no weaker than the first: such compositions as “Ördögi Kör” (“The Vicious Circle”, No. 9 in the annual Slágerlistá'81 TOP20), “Kövesd A Folyót ”(“ Go with the flow ”),“ Szerpentin ”(“ Serpentine ”) and others testified to the existence of great creative potential in the group. In the same year, the group took 3rd place at the Dresden Music Festival and received an audience prize. However, by then Peter Erdös had completely lost interest in Kati És A Kerek Perec: he stated that “there is no need for two groups playing in identical styles” and deprived the group of state support. Ernö Kish and Kati Nagy tried to work abroad, but faced numerous difficulties and in 1983 announced the closure of their project.
