Verkhratsky, Sergey Avramovich

Biography

He studied at the Warsaw and Odessa universities . After training, he taught at a medical assistant in the Caucasus. The participant of the First World War - the surgeon of the front-line hospital. After the revolution, he worked as a doctor in the Poltava region, from 1922 to 1939 - chief physician of the Turbovsky district hospital. In 1939-1941 he worked as an assistant at the department of surgery of the Donetsk Medical Institute .

In 1940 he defended his thesis "Household medicine in Ukraine". During World War II, he was the head physician of evacuation hospitals, one of the first to organize neurosurgical departments and evacuation hospitals for the wounded. In 1945 he defended his doctoral work "Materials on the history of medicine in Ukraine during the introduction of zemstvo".

Since January 1946 he has been working in Stanislav, a professor at the medical institute . From 1946 to 1968 he was the head of the department of hospital surgery, he also taught the history of medicine (from 1958 the history of medicine at the institute was separated into a separate course). He was among the founders of the Scientific Society of Surgeons of Ivano-Frankivsk and the Scientific Society of Medical Historians.

He is the author of 86 scientific papers, in particular, on the history of medicine in Ukraine, published the works “Shop Medicine in Ukraine” (1946) and “Barber Dresses in Ukraine. The first vaccinations against smallpox in Ukraine "(1947). In the framework of medical research, he described a medical business in Zaporizhzhya Sich, conducted a study on the first city and county doctors of Ukraine. The author of the textbook "History of Medicine", in 1991, he published the fourth edition. In 1958, his historical intelligence, “The Life and Activities of Doctor of Medicine Francis-George Skaryna,” was published , as well as the work “ N. Bidloo — the organizer and lifelong director of the national hospital school.”

In the manuscripts there remained studies of musical folklore in Ukraine, “The Shadows of the Ruins of Ostrog Castle” - a monograph about the family of Prince Constantine Ostrog , “The Lady with an Ermine” - about Princess Sophia Czartoryskaya.

Memory

The Department of Hospital Surgery (now the Department of Surgery No. 2 with a course of cardiac surgery) of the Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University is named after S. A. Verkhratsky. A student scholarship named after Sergei Verkhratsky was also established.
