Holger Heinrich Herwig ( born Holger Heinrich Herwig ; born September 25, 1941 , Hamburg ) is a Canadian military historian of German descent.

Biography
Herwig studied at the University of British Columbia and the University of New York . He defended his doctoral dissertation. In 1971-1972 he was an assistant professor at Indiana University . In 1971-1989 he taught at the University of Vanderbilt , received the title of professor. In 1985-1986 he was a visiting professor of strategy at the Naval College, and then went to work as a professor of history at the University of Calgary . In 1991-1996 he headed the Department of History, and since 2001 - the Department of Canadian Studies at the Center for Military and Strategic Studies. In 1998, he was a visiting professor at the College of William and Mary . In 2010, he taught at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs .
Holger Herwig is a member of the Royal Society of Canada and has received several scholarships, including the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation . He is a member of Atlantik-Brücke .
Herwig is the author of more than a dozen books and many specialized monographs, primarily about the First World War . His works have been translated into Chinese, Czech, German, Polish, Portuguese and Serbo-Croatian. He was a consultant to the Discovery Channel and other television programs.
